Upcoming Events at Randall Library
Early Literacy Workshops for Pre-schoolers, Every 2nd Friday of the month at the Randall Library in Stow, 10:30am- Next Meeting January 11th, 2012 Cynthia Maxfield, the Early Childhood Coordinator of the Nashoba Community Partnership for Children will be at the Randall Library to present to children and parents fun activities and games to promote early literacy skills in pre-school aged children.

Wednesdays @ 12:00pm and every 2nd Friday at the Randall Library, @ 10:30am-SAPN Meeting At the Randall Library in Stow-The Randall Library is proud to offer a room upstairs to the SAPN (Stow Area Parents Network) for this meeting. Focused for caregivers of infants, this get- together is for caregivers to meet and get to know others with infants in the area to swap stories and hang out and play!

Reading with the Reading Dogs! Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00pm at the Randall Library in Stow- Come to the Randall Library and enjoy some quality time reading to Emma, Logan or Herbie the Randall Library reading dogs! This is a great opportunity for children to experience the fun and rewards of reading to a “non-judgmental audience” and practicing their reading with the comfort of a warm, furry friend to listen to them. Sign up in advance is required and the sign-up sheets are at the circulation desk in the library.

Christmas Tree Home Pickup Service
Another Holiday season is at hand and Stow’s Boy Scout Troop 1 is again scheduling home Christmas tree pickups following the holidays for residents of Stow. The scouts would like to make tree disposal convenient for you. Tree pickup can be scheduled by sending an email to [email protected]. Christmas tree pickup is $10 per tree and checks made payable to Troop 1 Stow can be mailed to Troop 1 Stow, PO Box 75, Stow, MA 01775.  Or, go online to www.troop1stow.net and order with a credit card.

Please make your reservation by January 2nd. Trees will be picked up at the end of your driveway January 18, 19, & 20. We request trees be at the end of your driveway by 6PM on January 18.    The scouts will appreciate your order. The proceeds will help Stow continue one of its finest youth programs and its ongoing monetary needs to support equipment purchases, camping trips and the many activities the troop engages in.

Winter Coat Drive
Time to clean out your closets!  Please donate your gently used winter coats to Coats for Kids. “Anyone who needs a coat will have one” is the mission of Anton’s Cleaners’ 18th annual Coats for Kids drive.  Coats are needed for all ages: children, teens, adults, and babies.  Our Girl Scout Troop is currently running a Coats for Kids drive through Monday, January 7, 2013.  Collection boxes are located at Center School, Hale Middle School, Randall Library, and Global Fitness in Stow.  For more information, please contact us at [email protected].

Stow Area Parents Network Winter Pre-Kindergarten Playgroup
Is your child entering kindergarten in September 2013? If so, please come meet some future classmates and their caregivers at SAPN’s Pre-K Craft Party on Friday, January 11 at 3PM at Stow Town Hall!  Siblings are welcome and you do not need to be a member of SAPN to join in the craft making fun at this free event!  If you are a SAPN member, please RSVP on BigTent by January 7 (non-SAPN members can RSVP to Jen Connor at [email protected]). NRHS Class Play Competitions
The NRHS Class Play Competitions are coming soon! Casts have been selected and rehearsals have started. The students are responsible for all aspects of the production. They will all come together for one exciting Class Play Competition on January 11th, 2013 at 6:30pm in the NRHS auditorium, 12 Green Road, Bolton. Looking for Past Lip Sync Photos
2013 marks the 25th anniversary of this event and the Stow PTO is putting together a retrospective of the past years to play before and after the show.  We need your help!  If you have any photos of past Lip Syncs, especially the early years, please send them in to be included in the slide show.  If at all possible, please try to include the year of the photo.
Email digital photos to [email protected] or send photographs regular mail to the Center School, attn: Lip Sync, 403 Great Road, along with directions on where to return your photo.  All photos need to be received by January 16th.

Community Preservation State Match Received For Stow’s CPA Funds
Stow recently received over $170,000 in matching funds from the state’s Community Preservation Act (CPA) Trust Fund for fiscal year 2011. In total, Stow has received over $2.5 million dollars in state matching funds since its adoption of the CPA in 2001.

The Stow Community Preservation Committee is accepting proposals for the May Annual Town Meeting.  The Committee requests that initial proposals be received no later than January 25th.  Proposal forms can be found on the Community Preservation page of the town website  www.stow-ma.gov  Endorsed proposals will be considered by voters at May Town Meeting. The committee usually meets the second and fourth Mondays of every month in the Stow Town Building and welcomes public input.  You can email the committee at communitypreservation@stow-ma.gov.

Center School Tour

Publishing Networking Group Meeting 
Saturday, January 26, 10:30 a.m., Randall Library, 19 Crescent St., Stow. Guest Speaker: Andrew Goldstein. Concord resident Andrew Goldstein had his first novel, “The Bookie’s Son,” published in May, 2012, and in September he also became a publisher. Andrew Goldstein was born in the Bronx, married young, had a nonfiction book published in his early twenties, and had children in his thirties. He was a writer, tree planter, assistant school librarian, organic orange and olive farmer, school bus driver, Zamboni driver, editor, tennis pro, stock broker, power transformer tube winder, and custom builder. Andrew is going to talk about how he has run a very successful custom building company for 32 years , but with little of the skill set normally associated with running a successful company. He says, “The few skills I bring to the business were learned when I was 10 years old taking bets for my father.”

FARNWR Winter Solstice Avian Survey
Sunday, January 6th at 8am-10amThis time of year when the days reach their shortest is traditionally when birds in our area are counted.  In the spirit of this effort we will be doing an informal survey of birds found in the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge. Bird ID skills helpful, but not necessary. Please bring binoculars and a bird ID guide and remember to dress warm. Young Writers Annual Workshop  
On March 2, 2013, the 23rd Annual Betty Curtis Worcester County Young Writers’ Conference will be held at St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury. The conference is open to all students in grades 7-12. The conference is a one-day event during which students attend workshops and readings and spend time writing in a supportive environment. Students attend several small and large group sessions, choosing from poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and playwriting. Students will hear from keynote speaker and local author Matthew Quick, who wrote The Silver Linings Playbook, which was recently adapted into film, Boy 21, and Sorta Like a Rock Star.
