Upcoming Events at Randall Library
Saturday, January 26, 2012, 10:30am- Ed Morgan “The Music Man” Performance-Come enjoy an interactive sing-along for children ages 1 to 99 at the Randall Library in Stow with Ed Morgan “The Music Man”. Learn new ways to connect with your family through songs. This family friendly performance will have everyone up moving, dancing and singing. We hope to see you there!

Community Preservation State Match Received For Stow’s CPA Funds
The Stow Community Preservation Committee is accepting proposals for the May Annual Town Meeting.  The Committee requests that initial proposals be received no later than January 25th.  Proposal forms can be found on the Community Preservation page of the town website  www.stow-ma.gov  Endorsed proposals will be considered by voters at May Town Meeting. The committee usually meets the second and fourth Mondays of every month in the Stow Town Building and welcomes public input.  You can email the committee at communitypreservation@stow-ma.gov.

Nashoba Chess Club Meetings
The Nashoba Chess Club meets on Fridays at The Nashoba High School cafeteria, located at  12 Green Rd, Bolton MA. Instructions for all levels start at 5:30 pm. Games will take place 6 –7:30 pm. Coaching is provided by Dr. Toth. Light refreshments and snacks are served (we ask that each player contribute $2 at the door to cover costs).

For experienced players, the club is also an opportunity for mentoring besides playing challenging chess games with peers. Movie and Discussion: Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death
On January 25th at 7 pm the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton will present the 55 minute film “Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death,” in which Dr. Mark Greger M. D. offers practical advice on how to best feed ourselves to prevent, treat, and reverse many of the top 15 causes of death in the United States.  He will extensively cover the latest research on heart disease and cancer as well as research on stroke, kidney & lung diseases.  The public is welcome to attend and there will be a short discussion to follow.  The church is located at 353 Great Road in Stow (at the intersection of Rts. 117 and 62).  The film will be shown in Fellowship Hall, which is wheelchair accessible.  For more information contact Joris Wils at 978-394-2196 or visit www.fpc-stow-acton.org.

Publishing Networking Group Meeting 
Saturday, January 26, 10:30 a.m., Randall Library, 19 Crescent St., Stow. Guest Speaker: Andrew Goldstein. Concord resident Andrew Goldstein had his first novel, “The Bookie’s Son,” published in May, 2012, and in September he also became a publisher. Andrew Goldstein was was a writer, tree planter, assistant school librarian, organic orange and olive farmer, school bus driver, Zamboni driver, editor, tennis pro, stock broker, power transformer tube winder, and custom builder. Andrew is going to talk about how he has run a very successful custom building company for 32 years , but with little of the skill set normally associated with running a successful company. Supervised Ice Skating – Sunday January 27th
On Sunday, January 27th, there will be supervised ice skating at Snow Field in Stow from Noon-2:00 PM. Weather permitting, the hale2washington 8th graders, along with parent supervision, will be hosting an ice skating party. Come enjoy the music, ice skate and hang out with friends! For a donation of $5, all school age children can be dropped off anytime between Noon-2:00 PM. Hot chocolate and snacks will be available for an additional fee.  All children will be required to wear helmets and must have a waiver signed by a parent. Halalisa Singers to Perform January 27th
The Halalisa Singers, a 30+ group of world music performers, will be presenting their winter concert “To Reach the Golden Door:  Songs of the Immigration Experience” at 3pm on January 27th at the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton.  This concert will include songs about the challenges, joys, and sorrows of the immigrant experience. The concert will be conducted by the group’s Artistic Director Mary Neumann, and will feature pianist Valerie Ross, percussionist Bertram Lehmann, and violinist Jack McCreless. All are welcome. The New Revival Coffeehouse Presents Chasing Blue
Chasing Blue is a hard-driving bluegrass band made up of young and talented musicians.  Band members have experience in blues, rock, funk, jazz, Texas swing and traditional Canadian fiddle tunes.  They’ll be playing at the New Revival Coffeehouse on Saturday, Feb. 2nd at First Parish Church of Stow and Acton, 353 Great Road in Stow (at the intersection of Rts. 117 and 62).  All are welcome.  Doors open at 7:30 pm and the show starts at 8 pm.  Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.  For advanced tickets or more information email [email protected] or call 978-274-2593. Superbowl Sunday Hike
Get ready for the Superbowl by joining the Stow Conservation Trust for a walk, snowshoe or ski from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Superbowl Sunday, Feb. 3rd, at Gardner Hill (the Stow Town Forest).  Meet leaders Susan Crane, SCT Trustee, and John Sangermano, Stow Recreation Commission member, at the trailhead parking lot at the end of Bradley Lane, off the south side of Route 117 just west of the Stow Shopping Center.  We might even have a campfire along the Assabet River.  For more information or to RSVP, please contact Susan at [email protected] or 978-298-5349.  She will then let you know about trail conditions and provide any updated information before the hike.

Don’t Just Talk About the Weather: Learn About It!
New England weather will be the topic of the Winter Meeting of the Stow Historical Society at Randall Library at 7 pm on Thursday, February 7th.

Don McCasland, Program Director at the Blue Hill Observatory Science Center, will talk about the way in which weather has influenced life in New England, correlating observations from Stow residents over several centuries with historical weather events, from droughts and floods through extreme events like the Hurricane of ‘38 and the Blizzard of ‘76. He’ll also touch on the work of the Blue Hill Observatory, the way weather data are collected and forecast, and the specter of climate change. The program will be held in the second-floor meeting room at Randall Library. You’re invited to bring a dessert to share with others in attendance.

Stow Community Blood Drive
Please consider giving a small amount of time to save a life !!  We invite all willing donors from Stow and surrounding towns to give blood at St. Isidore Church on Rt. 117 in Stow on Saturday, February 9 between 8 – 1.

If you are planning to donate, please call the Red Cross to make an appointment at: 1-800-RED CROSS. This will help us to get you in and out in the quickest time possible. SAPN Valentine’s Day Party
Saturday, February 9, 2-3:30pm; at Jam Time (86 Powdermill Rd., Maynard). Love is in the air, but thankfully our Valentine’s Party is a kid-centered singles’ event, so no dates are necessary. Bring your kids to Jam Time for a rockin’ good time on the slides, bouncy house, and push vehicles. They can play with friends and make new ones all while mom and dad relax with their friends in the café or on one of the many plush couches around the room. As always, our party is open to community and you do not need to be a member of SAPN to attend.  We will need volunteers to bring goodies for the party room, so if you are a SAPN member, please RSVP on BigTent (by February 8th) and consider signing up to help make this a LOVEly party. Stow Democrats to Hold Caucus
The Stow Democratic Town Committee is pleased to invite all Stow Democrats (registered as of 12/31/12) to our caucus at the Randall Library, 19 Crescent Street, on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.  (Snow date:  Feb. 12, 7 p.m.)  The caucus starts at 2 p.m.  Check-in begins at 1:30 p.m. and closes at 2:15 p.m.  Only registered Democrats from Stow as of December 31, 2012, as shown the voter registration list, will be allowed to vote at the local caucus. The purpose of the caucus is to elect Delegates and Alternates to attend the Massachusetts Democratic Party Platform Convention where they will debate and adopt a new party platform. The Convention will be held Saturday June 1 at the Tsongas Center, UMASS Lowell.

New Book Club Meeting
The next book club meeting will be on Tuesday February 19 at 7pm at the library. Vanessa Diffenbaugh’s The Language of Flowers will be discussed.  How do you find your way home when you’ve closed all the bridges?  Join us to discuss how it happens.  Newcomers are most welcome!

NRSD February Vacation Enrichment Program

Three Rivers Chorus Seeking Members
Three Rivers Chorus, Ellen Oak, Artistic Director, is seeking dedicated SATB chamber ensemble singers for April performance. Diverse repertoire includes choral suite by Benjamin Britten; English and Italian madrigals; and songs from Brazil and Broadway. Free Mom to Mom Program in Bolton
The Mom To Mom program is being offered in Bolton, January through April. Mom to Mom is designed to encourage and support all mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers with biblically-based teaching on parenting, women’s health, and relationships. The program runs for 10 Thursdays starting January 31st 2013, from 9:15-11:00 AM. We meet in Fellowship Hall at Trinity Church in Bolton, 14 Wattaquadock Hill Rd. (just off Route 117). The program starts with refreshments and coffee,  then there is either a guest speaker or video followed by small group discussion. Nursery care is available for infants through Kindergarteners.
