Upcoming Library Events
Sally Cragin’s “Mini-Beast Menagerie,” Thursday, August 8th at 2:00pm – Are snails really slow? Do millipedes have 1000s of legs? Why do hermit crabs change shells? How big do cockroaches get? Come find out! Mini-beasts include hermit crabs, snails, millipedes and hissing cockroaches. This program is supported in part by the Friends of the Randall Library and a grant from the Stow Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Where In the OM Am I?  Author Sara DiVello, Thursday, August 8th at 5:30pm- Boston author Sara DiVello worked in PR and marketing for 13 years before she realized she preferred yoga mats and bare feet to cubicles and high heels. She shares her journey with us in her first book, which Shape Magazine chose as one of “Twelve Books to Take to the Beach” and was featured in Boston Magazine. Sara will read from her book and teach the audience some “Yoga You Can Do At Your Desk.”

Young Eagles Flight Rally 
All those between ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies on Saturday, August 10 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, as EAA Chapter 196 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at Minute Man Airfield, 302 Boxboro Road, Stow. Registration takes place next to Nancy’s Airfield Café. Pilots at the event will also explain more about their airplanes, allowing young people to discover how airplanes work and how pilots ensure safety is the prime concern before every flight.   The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation. Nashoba Regional High School, Class of 1988, 25 Year Reunion!
Saturday, August 10th from 12-4 at the Tiki Bar at Nashoba Valley in Westford. Stow Historical Society and West School Program Committee
Stow West School Museum Open House: Sunday Aug. 11, 3:00 – 5:30 pm. Visit Stow’s historic 1825 schoolhouse and learn about education in Stow in the nineteenth century. The schoolhouse is located at the intersection of Hiley Brook and Harvard Rds. It was used as a school for over seventy-five years and has been restored to its nineteenth century appearance after being used as a private residence in the twentieth century.

2nd Annual Win-Win At The Randall Library
During the week of August 13 , the Randall Library is once again offering a terrific win-win in conjunction with the Stow Food Pantry. Simply bring in any new/unused personal care product from the list provided and we will forgive up to $3 of your existing library fines! (“Billed” items are excluded.) Donations, especially personal care products, are historically lower during the summer months at the Food Pantry. Help them help others and help yourself–it’s truly a win-win for everyone!
Suggested donations: shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, disposable razors, shaving cream, bar soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, feminine products, band-aids, hand sanitizer, kids’ sunblock.

Stow Area Parents Network (SAPN) Pre-Kindergarten Playgroup
Friday, August 16th, 3:30-5PM at the Hudson Splash Pad & Hudson Creamery (Houghton St. & Main St., Hudson). Calling all kids about to enter kindergarten! Join us for our last pre-kindergarten playgroup for the 2012-2013 year and soak up the last bit of summer with your soon-to-be classmates. We will meet at the Hudson Splash Pad (at the corner of South & Houghton Streets) for some fun in the sun and then head over to Hudson Creamery (formerly Dairy Joy) for a tasty treat.  All local children who are about to enter kindergarten, along with their caregivers, are invited to join us – you do not need to be a member of SAPN to participate.  To RSVP, or if you have any questions, please email Jen at [email protected]. SCT Bike for the Woods
The 12th annual Stow Bike for the Woods is taking place Sun Aug 18. This is a family-friendly road-bike ride in support of the Stow Conservation Trust. Registration starts at 8:30AM, ride at 9am. The ride starts at the Town Common in front of the Randall Library at the junction of Routes 117 and 62 in Stow. You can register for the ride and get more information at http://bikeforthewoods.org

Choose from a variety of ride lengths including 5, 14, 28, 35, 48 and a 65 mile metric century. All ages and abilities are welcome. The routes are marked and cue sheets are provided. The routes take you by some of the conservation property in the area. See up close why Stow and surrounding towns are considered biking central by those in the know. The Stow Conservation Trust aims to preserve open space for future generations. All proceeds from the ride go to the Trust.

Upcoming Artisans Fair & Local Artisans Wanted
The Lake Boon Association is hosting the 5th Annual “Lake Boon Artisans Fair” on Saturday, August 24,  10am-3:30pm at the beautiful Pine Bluffs Recreation Area, as part of the fun-filled 2013 Water Carnival weekend.  Shoppers mark your calendars and come support your talented neighbors!  We are also looking for additional local artisans to participate, and are asking for a nominal donation from each artisan ($10 for Lake Boon Assoc. members, $15 for non-members) to reserve a space.  Artisans will need to provide their own table/display for selling.  Space is limited so please contact us soon for more information.  Call or email Kris (978-430-4109[email protected] ) or Lynne (978-212-5269[email protected] ).

Sing with Sounds of Stow Chorus and Orchestra
The Sounds of Stow Chorus and Orchestra welcomes singers in all voice categories to join with us for our fall concert with full orchestra to be held Sunday, Nov. 24th at the Hale School Auditorium.  Artistic Director and Conductor Barbara Jones has selected an exciting program of Russian choral/orchestral works: Rachmaninoff’s second piano concerto, Gretchaninoff’s “Hvalite Boga,” and Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances.”

Open rehearsals are Monday evenings beginning August 26th from 7:30-9:30 at the First Parish Church, 353 Great Rd. Gun Violence Forum Rescheduled
The Stow Democratic Town Committee   announced  that  the panel  discussion on  Gun Violence originally  scheduled  for  May 15  will be  held  September 18  from 7 to 9 pm  at Hale Middle School.  Panel members will include  John Rosenthal (  Stop  Handgun Violence), Angus  McQuilken (  Massachusetts  Coalition  to Prevent Gun Violence), James Wallace (Gun Owners Action League)  and  State Representative  Harold Naughton (Chairman of the  Public  Safety and Homeland Security Committee).  State Senator James Eldridge will moderate the program. Attendance is free.  Ample time    to answer  questions from the audience will  be provided. The  cost  of liability insurance  and traffic control for the program will be borne by the committee and by private donations.

Crafter’s Wanted For St. Isidore 2nd Annual Fall Festival 
Looking for crafters for Fall Festival to be held Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 from 9AM to 3PM at St. Isidore Parish, Great Rd, Stow.  8′ booth is $30. and a 6′ booth is $20.  Please go online to www.stisidorestow.org to find the forms for submission.

Annual Maynard Road Race
Mark your calendar for the upcoming 16th Annual Maynard 5KRun/2M Walk Road Race on SATURDAY,  September 21, 2013. All proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Assabet Valley.  The exciting newer Race Route has made the event even more exciting! The very popular Kids Race will be part of this year’s event again!

The 1M Kids Race, for children 4-11 years old, will begin at 10:00 AM, with the same start and finish of the larger races.  Entry fee is $7/ea.  The 5K Run/2M Walk Races will begin at 11:00 AM sharp on Summer Street across from Memorial Park!
Registration for these  races will take place from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 52 Nason Street, Maynard.  There will also be Kid activities and music to enjoy prior to the races. All 5K Run/2M Walk entries received by August 31st will get a free t-shirt.  Entry fees are $25 in advance or $30 day of the race.

The Race Route will start and end in Maynard Center, winding through the streets of Maynard.  An Awards Ceremony will take place following the Races.
