SAPN Halloween Party!

We will have treats, games, and crafts for the witches, skeletons, pumpkins, and all costumed tots. The party is free for current SAPN members and is $5/family for nonmembers. Everyone is welcome! Children’s Safety Day at Shaw’s
The Stow Police Department and Shaw’s Supermarket of Stow will be hosting a Children’s Safety Day at Shaws Supermarket in Stow, on October 27, 2012 from 11am-3pm. We will have the Mobil Safety Street presented by UMASS Memorial Hospital Injury Prevention Center which highlights the importance of being safe.
The Mobile Safety Street consists of a custom-designed bright yellow school bus and safety education trailer – each one filled with potential dangers for children to actively examine and consider. The safety education trailer has collapsible panels that open out to create a two third scale model of an actual street with houses and shops, hospitals and fire stations, crosswalks and traffic lights, cars backing out of driveways and downed power lines, barking dogs and shady characters. The inside of the trailer is a realistic home environment highlighting key places where safety issues abound: stairs, bathtub, stove, cabinets with poisons and medicines at child level, storage of firearms, etc.
Stow Police will assist with fingerprints and photos and there will be a Car Seat Technician available for questions regarding child passenger safety.
Minuteman Musket at the Library Celebration
Saturday, October 27, 2012, 2:00-3:30 at the Randall Library in Stow- Town Wide Minuteman Musket at the Library Celebration!-Come enjoy the fun when “Hands on History”, The Stow Historical Society, and representatives of the Stow Minutemen come to celebrate the installation of the historic Stow Minuteman Musket at the Randall Library. “Hands on History” will have 18th century artifacts and reproductions to touch and look at, and will have uniforms from the British Army of King George III, George Washington’s army and the French army that you can try on to experience history first hand. Bring your children and experience your local history.
Stow Women’s Club Upcoming Events
On Saturday, October 27th, we will be having our annual Progressive Dinner where members and spouses/guests meet at one home for appetizers, split up to several homes for the dinner course and reunite at one home for dessert. It is great fun! On November 19th, we will have a flower arranging class at Concord Flower Shop where you can make your own Thanksgiving centerpiece arrangement. The 29th annual Breakfast with Santa, our primary fund-raising event, will be held this year on December 8th. A number of other activities are in the planning stages for 2013. The Stow Women’s Club is a great way to make new friends and get involved in the community. We welcome new members, so please come join us! Publishing Networking Group Meeting
Saturday, November 3, 10:30 a.m., Randall Library, 19 Crescent St., Stow. Vermont author Judith Dickerman-Nelson will discuss the publication of her book, Believe in Me: A Teen Mom’s Story. Judith Dickerman-Nelson received her BA in English from Umass Lowell and her MFA from Emerson College. She has taught writing at both the high school and college level and has attended Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference and the Vermont Studio Center. Gospel Christmas Music Event Open Rehearsals Begin Nov. 1st
December 16th, 2012, the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton will present a special “Gospel Christmas” Vespers service, featuring Margaret Bonds’s “Ballad of the Brown King.” First Parish Church would like to invite members of the community to come and sing with the church’s Adult and Youth Choirs during this event. Rehearsals for adults who want to participate will take place from 7:15 to 8:15 every Thursday evening, beginning November 1 and continuing until the concert. Youth who would like to participate in the “Gospel Christmas” can begin attending Youth Choir rehearsals from 4:30 to 5:30 on Thursdays, beginning on November 1. There are no auditions and all experience and talent levels are welcome. Stow Historical Society Potluck Dinner Meeting
All friends of Stow and New England history are invited to the Stow Historical Society’s
potluck dinner meeting beginning at 7 pm on Saturday, November 3. Historian Peter Benes, author of Meetinghouses of Early New England, will discuss the changing architecture and functions of New England’s iconic meetinghouses over the centuries. Most people think of meetinghouses as white, rectangular buildings adorned with tall steeples, as exemplified by Stow’s First Parish Church. But while First Parish is a successor to four earlier meetinghouses, it’s a 19th-Century church, not a meetinghouse. Many early meetinghouses were painted in yellows, greens, oranges and other colors. Some were rectangular, but often without any steeple at all. Many were square, with hipped roofs and central spires. Stow apparently did escape the sectarian conflicts that afflicted some meetinghouses. In his book, Mr. Benes notes instances in which factions stole or burned meetinghouse timbers prior to construction to try to alter their locations. And he cites a 1790s meetinghouse in which Baptists staged an around-the-clock, two-week-long service in order to keep a Congregationalist minister from speaking. The Stow Recreation Ski Program Registration Night is Wednesday, November 7th from 6:00 – 7:00pm at the Stow Town Hall. Annual Holiday Craft Fair
The Annual Holiday Craft Fair sponsored by The Stow Friends of the Council on Aging will be held on Saturday, November 10, from 9am to 3pm at the St. Isidore Church located at 429 Great Rd (Rte 117), Stow, MA. You are invited to attend and take advantage of the great holiday craft shopping provided by carefully selected crafters from the local area. Many of last year’s crafters are returning and some new ones have been added. There will be many hand crafted items including paintings on wood and glass, metal and glass jewelry, cross stitch items, scenic photography, handmade pottery, children’s educational books by Usborne, hand knitted items, and scroll saw baskets just to mention a few. There will be a pottery making demonstration. There will be a baked goods table featuring breads, cakes and sweets and home canned jellies and jams. There will be arts and crafts made by the Seniors of Stow. Visit our used book table and have the opportunity to get slightly used best sellers from the past year at a very good price. Stow Residents To Dance In Nutcracker
The magic of the holiday season arrives as Commonwealth Ballet’s sixteenth annual production of The Nutcracker returns to the stage at Acton-Boxborough High School, and Regis College, Casey Theatre, for eight spectacular shows featuring the talents of numerous Stow natives. Filled with laughter, magic, and wonder for the whole family, Commonwealth Ballet’s Nutcracker is renowned for its exciting dancing, humor, and warmth. The 15 Company members of Commonwealth Ballet including Stow resident Benjamin Kuefler, dancing the roles of Lieutenant, Party Teen, Chinese Boy, Neapolitan Boy, and Spanish Boy, and additional Stow dancers Margaret Hagopian, Margaret Kuefler, Christina Milne, Ola Patykowski, Victor Patykowski, Masha Schmitt, and Simonida Spasojevic, will share the stage with world-class guest artists from New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and over 70 local performers.
