August at the Randall Library
4th Annual Win-Win – During the week of August 4, the Randall Library is offering a terrific win-win in conjunction with the Stow Food Pantry. Simply bring in any new/unused personal care product from the list provided and we will forgive up to $3 of your existing library fines (“billed” items are excluded)!

Donations, especially personal care products, are historically lower during the summer months at the Food Pantry. Visit the library from Tuesday, August 4 to Friday, August 7, with your donation. Help them help others and help yourself – it’s truly a win-win for everyone! Suggested donations; shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, disposable razors, shaving cream, bar soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, feminine products, band-aids, hand sanitizer, kids’ sunblock.

Free Concert AT STOW COMMUNITY PARK
Come enjoy the music on August 6 at 6:30pm with Prizm, a new, semi-professional, 4-piece classic rock band based in central Massachusetts. They have many years of live performance experience. They perform classics from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, including songs by the Beatles, Jimmy Buffett, Byrds, E.L.O., Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker,The Doors, and many others. Bring a blanket or chair to sit on and come enjoy some great music!

YOUNG EAGLES FLIGHT RALLY
All those between ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies on Saturday, August 8, from 9am to 12pm, as EAA Chapter 196 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at Minute Man Airfield, 302 Boxboro Rd. Registration takes place next to Nancy’s Airfield Café. Pilots at the event will also explain more about their airplanes, allowing young people to discover how airplanes work and how pilots ensure safety is the prime concern before every flight.

The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation. Since the program started in 1992, volunteer EAA pilots have flown more than 1.8 million young people in more than 90 countries. Mindfulness Service at FPC
Paul M. Galvin, Ph.D., will present a service on mindfulness on Sunday, August 9, at 10am, at the First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC). The presentation is meant to be experiential and will introduce and guide participants in formal mindfulness practices. Dr. Galvin has taught Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) classes at the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School since 2010. Captain Sargent Day with the Stow Conservation Commission
Join the Stow Conservation Commission for a day “Down on the Farm” on Saturday, August 15.  Come take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly acquired Brewer Woods property.  Learn about the history of Captain Sargent Farm.  Learn how to identify common invasive plant species and what can be done about them. Hike the woodlands and wetlands and then then cool off with a glass of lemonade while exploring the Community Gardens.  Stop in during “Open Garden” hours and meet with our gardeners and farmers to see what’s growing!  All events are free and begin at 9:30am.  Park at the South Acton Road Parking Lot or at the Community Gardens on Tuttle Lane. Rain or shine. All ages welcome, please no dogs at the scheduled events.

Stow Fire Rescue’s Wash the Fire Truck Day
** FREE admission **  Cool fun on a hot day. On Sunday, August 16, Stow Fire Rescue will be holding its annual fun event at the Stow Fire Station (16 Crescent St.). Kids will be able to wash a fire truck, jump on the moon bounces, get their temporary tattoos, and explore the rescue vehicles. Rain date to be determined if necessary. Stow Bike for the Woods
The 14th annual Stow Bike for the Woods is taking place  Sunday, August 23. This is  a family-friendly road-bike ride in support of the Stow Conservation Trust. Registration starts at 8:30am, ride at 9am. The ride starts in front of the Randall Library at the junction of Routes 117 and 62. You can register for the ride and get more information at http://bikeforthewoods.org. We will have food and drink available.

Choose from a variety of ride lengths including 5,14, 28, 35, 48, and a 65 mile metric century. All ages and abilities are welcome. The routes are well marked and cue sheets are provided. The routes take you by many of the conservation properties in the area. See up close why Stow and surrounding towns are considered biking central by those in the know. The Stow Conservation Trust aims to preserve open space for future generations. Fall soccer registration is now open for Stow boys and girls born between 9/1/09 and 4/1/11. Munchkins (Pre-K) and Transitions (K) will meet on Saturday mornings with an emphasis on fun and teamwork.
