Randall Library Programs
Author Talk: Richard Johnson Thursday, February 13, 2014 at 7:00pm- Author Richard Johnson, curator of the Sports Museum at TD Garden will be at the Randall Library to present details about the history of Fenway Park and his book Field of Our Fathers: An Illustrated History of Fenway Park 1912-2012.  Mr. Johnson’s presentation is loaded with facts and images about the home of the Boston Red Sox and chronicles the past 100 years of the park including important details of baseball history as well as non-sports related details about Fenway Park. Join us for a fascinating evening as sports fans prepare for another exciting baseball season.

Teen Writing Club: Wednesday, February 19th at 5:00pm- Randall Library’s Teen Advisory Board runs the Teen Writing Club, and they meet once a month. Attendees will share writing, write with writing prompts, and discuss each other’s work and writing tips.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting, Wednesday, February 19th at 6:00pm- Every month the TAB meets and helps the Youth Services Librarian decide what materials and programs to have for the library. Includes a book discussion, volunteer hours, and food!

Cradles to Crayons Clothing and Toy Drive
On Monday February 10 through Saturday March 1st, the Stow Junior Girl Scout Troop #72518 will be holding it’s 2nd annual Cradles to Crayons Clothing and Toy drive.  Collection boxes will be located in the lobbies of the Stow Post Office and the Center School.  Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play.  Cradles to Crayons collects new and nearly new children’s items through grassroots community drives and corporate donations. Donations are then processed and packaged by volunteers, and are distributed to disadvantaged children across the state through a collaborative network of social service agencies and school partners.  For more information on what items Cradles to Crayons will accept, please visit: www.cradlestocrayons.org.  For more information about this specific drive, please email [email protected].

Stow Garden Club Meeting
The Stow Garden Club will hold their next meeting on Wednesday, February 12th @ 7pm at the Union Church in Stow.  The program will be “Make and Take Arrangement”.  Members and guests will surely enjoy making a special floral arrangement, in time for Valentine’s Day and taking it home to enjoy.  The Stow Garden Club meets are held monthly and we invite anyone interested in gardening topics to attend the February or future meetings. Stow Solar Seminar
A Solar Seminar will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at Stow Town Hall, 375 Great Road, Stow, for local residents and businesses interested in learning about the Stow Solar Challenge and solar energy in general. Representatives of the Stow Solar Challenge and installer New England Clean Energy, as well as Stow residents, will speak about solar, provide an update on the status of the Challenge, and answer questions. Admission is free. The Stow Solar Challenge is being driven by the Stow Energy Working Group and local volunteers, with the endorsement of the town selectmen.

Solar Open House – Feb. 15
An Open House will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at the home of Ann Deluty, 51 Birch Hill Road, Stow, for local residents and businesses interested in learning about the Stow Solar Challenge and solar energy in general.  Ann will answer questions about the benefits and process of going solar. A representative from Stow Solar Challenge installer New England Clean Energy will be available to answer questions and provide online assessments of residential and commercial roofs. Admission is free.

Pete Seeger Memorial Sing-Along
The First Parish Church of Stow and Acton would like to welcome everyone to celebrate the life of beloved folk singer Pete Seeger with a sing-a-long of his famous songs on Saturday, Feb. 15th at 3:00 pm in the church sanctuary.   Lyrics will be provided and all ages and abilities are welcome.  If you have an instrument you’d like to play, please bring it.  If you have a favorite song you’d like to sing, or would like more information, contact Susan Avery at 978-263-0154 or [email protected].  Our sanctuary is wheelchair accessible.  The church is located at 353 Great Road (at the intersection of Routes 117 and 62) in Stow.

New Book Club
The next meeting of the New Book Club will be on Tuesday February 18th at 7PM at the library.  The Greater Journey–Americans in Paris by David McCullough will be discussed.  The first “Pilgrims” to Paris from America were mostly wealthy men in their 20″s.  They were mostly single, serious and ambitious.  Elizabeth Blackwell, America”s first female physician was there too.  Enjoy this historical perspective from this Pulitzer Prize winning author.  Join us and give us your insights on this great winter’s read!  Questions–978-897-6055.

Assabet Valley Little League Registration for the AVLL 2014 Spring Season is Open
AVLL Opening Day is April 27th. Please go to the Assabet Valley Little League website- www.avll.net to register. AVLL has tee ball, baseball and softball divisions for players ages 5-12.  Major and Minor baseball and softball require players to attend an evaluation early in the spring (March 8th). These divisions also will have tournament teams that begin play late in June or early July and could ultimately compete into August for an International Championship. In our developmental divisions, any player that will be six (6) yrs. old before May 1, 2014, and has played at least one season of tee ball, may register directly for Jr. Farm Baseball or Farm Softball. Little League International rules require one season of tee ball. AVLL is investigating a 13-15 year old girls softball travel team. Ann’s Friendship Community Supper
Friday February 21st, 2013 – 5:00 to 6:00PM. Our monthly free suppers are continuing with a slight change to the name.  Out of admiration for Ann Dowen, chef and founder, we are re-naming the suppers in her honor.  Menus change monthly. We promise that the meal will always be nutritious, delicious & include tempting desserts. There’s no reason to eat alone when you can join us for friendly company. Whether you are new in town or have been here a while, you are invited. Come alone or bring your family. Although there is no charge, donations are accepted. Registration Now Open For 2014-2015 SMS Youth Hockey
Registration for next year’s Mites, Squirts, Pee Wees, and Bantams youth hockey will be open until Friday, February 21st .  Little Devils (Learn to Play Hockey) will have a separate registration opening later this spring.  Sudbury-Maynard-Stow Youth Hockey is for boys and girls between the ages of 5-14 and includes residents of Bolton and Lancaster. “Who Is My Brother?”
On Sunday, February 23rd at 9 and 11 am, the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton will explore what has been called by author Michelle Alexander, “The New Jim Crow,” ongoing problems with racial class systems that we thought our country had shed years ago.  Inequities in our criminal justice system and its effects on communities of people of color will be a primary focus. Wednesday, February 26th; 7:00-8:00pm; Town Hall. If you are running for an office, this is a great time to take out nomination papers and get them signed all in one night!

Publishing Networking Group
Meets Saturday, March 1, 10:30 a.m., Randall Library, 19 Crescent St., Stow.  Brad Gray will discuss how to submit effective book proposals to publishers.  Topics covered will be analyzing the market for your book, finding the right publisher, writing the cover letter, deciding what materials to include in the submission package, positioning your book against the competition, convincing a publisher that there is a need for your book and that it will sell, and other topics. Brad Gray received his M.A. degree in English from the University of Iowa before embarking on a twenty-five year career as an acquisitions editor at several nationally prominent publishing houses.  Currently a freelance editor and writer working out of his home, he lives in Boxborough where he edits the Annual Town Report and serves as a consulting editor for the Boxborough Conservation Trust’s newsletter, Common Ground.   Anyone interested in publishing is welcome to attend this meeting.
