Stow Lions Club Monthly Dinner Meeting
This month the Stow Lions will hold our monthly dinner meeting on Wednesday, January 22 at 7:30.  We will be meeting at Emma’s Café in the Stow Shopping Center (117 Great Road).  Our District Governor and Secretary-Treasurer will be joining us to share some important Lions news and in addition, we welcome Dr. Brian Lisse as our guest speaker.   Dr. Lisse visits our club every year to talk about his project, Bridges to Malawi. Assabet River Rail Trail Meets
The Assabet River Rail Trail (ARRT) starts 2014 with a meeting on Thursday, January 23 at the Randall Public Library, 19 Crescent St in Stow.

Monthly ARRT meetings are open to the public and anyone interested in trail activities is invited to attend. Agenda items will include a town-by-town update. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. The Assabet River Rail Trail, Inc. (ARRT) is a non-profit organization formed for the purpose of promoting the creation of a 12.5-mile paved, multi-use, non-motorized trail that will connect Marlborough, Hudson, Stow, Maynard, and Acton. Volunteers organize trail clean-ups and trail count days as well as other activities. The Marlborough-Hudson portion of the trail officially opened in September 2005. ARRT encourages all trail users to be good stewards of the trail by not leaving any litter behind. For more information visit: www.arrtinc.org

Royal Scottish Country Dance Society
The Stow class of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society will take place on Friday, January 24th at the Stow Town Hall.  Scottish Country Dancing is the much older version of our Contra Dancing and is quite social.  Partners are not needed.  Soft-soled shoes are recommended.  There will be a Children’s Class beginning at 7:00 pm and and Adult/Teen Beginner’s Class at 7:30.  Social Dancing begins at 8:00.  All are welcome to join this enjoyable and social dance form Please join us.

Rotary Clubs Sponsor Meal Packaging Event
The Rotary Clubs of Nashoba Valley, Clinton, and Littleton are sponsoring a Stop Hunger Now food packaging event on January 25 from 10-1 in the cafeteria of Nashoba Regional High School in Bolton, MA. The goal is to package 10,000 meals in a couple of hours. Interested participants can register with [email protected]. Safari Photos on Display
An open house reception featuring wildlife photos from a recent African safari will welcome guests on Sunday, January 26, at Nancy’s Airfield Café, 302 Boxboro Rd., in Stow.  The event is open to the public, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and will include excellent refreshments prepared by the proprietor, Nancy McPherson.

The photos – many of them close-ups, nose-to-nose with lions, leopards and elephants – were taken by writer/photographer Robert Cooke, during a recent camera expedition to the newly-independent African nation of Botswana. A former British colony, Botswana is the site a huge and famous wetland known as the Okavango Delta.  The waters arrive as an annual flood from the northwest and nourish a large flatland before sinking into the sands of the ultra-dry Kalahari Desert. Botswana is also the home of three diamond mines – including the richest diamond mine in the world.

Botswana is also rich in wildlife, which includes numerous colorful bird species, abundant elephants, crocodiles, giraffes, gnus, warthogs , baboons and much else.

Gun Law For Citizens
A public meeting sponsored by the Assabet Gun Safety Coalition in combination with the Gun Owners Action League (GOAL) of Massachusetts, will feature a lecture by Jon Green on “Gun Law for Citizens”. This event will take place on Thursday evening, January 30, 2014 at 7PM in the South Hangar at Minute Man Air Field Stow, MA. All are invited, cost is free. Formed in 2012, the Assabet Gun Safety Coalition is a grass root network of law-abiding gun owning citizens who are dedicated to responsible gun ownership. The non-political group welcomes participation from all gun owners in the greater Assabet area. http://www.tagsc.org

Stow RTC To Select Delegates for GOP State Convention
On Thursday, January 30, 2014, 7PM at the Randall Library, the Stow Republican Town Committee welcomes registered Republicans to attend the Committee’s caucus meeting to elect delegates from the Town of Stow to the Republican State Convention on Saturday, March 22, 2014.  (Snow date is 2:00 PM on February 1, 2014 at 125 Birch Road in Stow.)    Delegates from Stow must have been registered as Republicans in our town on or before December 1st   in order to qualify for election, but delegates do not need to be a member of the Stow RTC.  In addition to electing the six primary delegates, the Stow RTC will also elect two alternate Delegates. Stow Community Blood Drive
St Isidore Church. Saturday February 1st, 8 AM – 1 PM. The Goodtime Stringband in Concert
The Goodtime Stringband plays bluegrass, swing, honky tonk and danceable fiddle tunes that make you tap your feet and sing along (dancing encouraged).  They’ll be playing at the New Revival Coffeehouse on Saturday, Feb. 1st at the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton, 353 Great Road in Stow (at the intersection of Rts. 117 and 62).  All are welcome.  Doors open at 7:30 pm and the show starts at 8 pm.  Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.  For advanced tickets or more information email [email protected] or call 978-274-2593. Stow Democrats to Hold Caucus
The Stow Democratic Town Committee invites all Stow Democrats  to our caucus at the Randall Library, 19 Crescent Street, on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014.  (Snow date:  Mar. 1, 2 p.m.)  The caucus starts at 2 p.m.  Check-in begins at 1:30 p.m. and closes at 2:15 p.m.  Only registered Democrats from Stow as of January 31, 2014, as shown on the voter registration list, will be allowed to vote at the local caucus.   The purpose of the caucus is to elect Delegates and Alternates to attend the Massachusetts State Democratic Party Convention to be held Friday and Saturday, June 13-14, 2014 at the DCU Center in Worcester.

Stow Garden Club Meeting
The Stow Garden Club will hold their next meeting on Wednesday, February 12th @ 7pm at the Union Church in Stow.  The program will be “Make and Take Arrangement”.  Members and guests will surely enjoy making a special floral arrangement, in time for Valentine’s Day and taking it home to enjoy.  The Stow Garden Club meets are held monthly and we invite anyone interested in gardening topics to attend the February or future meetings. New Book Club
The next meeting of the New Book Club will be on Tuesday February 18th at 7PM at the library.  The Greater Journey–Americans in Paris by David McCullough will be discussed.  The first “Pilgrims” to Paris from America were mostly wealthy men in their 20″s.  They were mostly single, serious and ambitious.  Elizabeth Blackwell, America”s first female physician was there too.  Enjoy this historical perspective from this Pulitzer Prize winning author.  Join us and give us your insights on this great winter’s read!  Questions–978-897-6055.
