Upcoming Events at the Randall Library in May
(http://www.randalllibrarystow.org)
Saturday, May 14, 2pm, “The Fort Mercer Rescue” with Ed Mason, Jr. – On Feb. 18, 1952, two 520′ T-2 tankers (the Pendelton and Fort Mercer) broke in half within 40 miles of each other east off Cape Cod in a raging storm with 70 knot winds and 60 ft seas. The Coast Guard responded with every available resource, including members of the Yakutat crew, ultimately rescuing 70 of the 84 crew members of the Pendelton and Fort Mercer. This inspiring story was the basis for the recent movie “The Finest Hour’, and at this presentation local Stow resident Ed Mason, Jr., who was one of the real-life heroes who was a Coast Guard sailor on the Yakutat, will talk about his experiences that night.

Wednesday, May 18, 12:30-1:30pm, “The Randall Library Cookbook Club” -The library is starting a new “cookbook club”! We will be choosing a new cookbook each month to “read”, and members of the club will make one of the recipes into an item to share at a library potluck with the other club members. Discussion of the recipes and the cookbook will follow the meal. This month we will be using Mollie Katzen’s “The Vegetable Dishes I Can’t Live Without”, copies of which are available for checkout at the Randall Library circulation desk. Sign-up is required and the sign-up sheet is at the Randall Library circulation desk (limit to 12 members).

Wednesday, May 18, 6:15pm, “Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten”, with Russ Cohen – join expert forager Russ Cohen for a 90-minute slide show to learn more about over 40 of the tastiest plants and mushrooms the region has to offer. Identification tips for each species will be provided along with information on edible portions, seasons of availability and preparation methods, as well as guidelines for safe and environmentally-responsible foraging.
