BASKETBALL REGISTRATION FOR THE 2015-16 SEASON IS NOW OPEN
SYBA (Stow Youth Basketball Association) is now accepting registration for the 2015-16 season for both the Bomber’s Basketball program (Gr. 1-2) and the Stow Recreation Basketball program (Gr. 3-8).  Go to www.stowhoops.org to register. Deadline is September 30.

The Stow Garden Club will begin their 2015-16 year on September 9 at 7pm at the Union Church in Stow. The initial meeting will be an open house and we welcome anyone interested in getting to know about the organization, our programs for civic beautification donated in various forms to the town, and the Club’s plans for the coming year. We will approve a slate of nominations for the coming year and enable members and guest to mingle. Come join us and learn about a great local organization. Introduction to Homeschooling, September 10, 7pm – Morgan Kennedy Henderson from Advocates for Home Education in Massachusetts will be at the Library to enlighten us on the homeschooling options for educating your family.

Eating Well On A Budget, September 17, 7pm – Professional nutritionist Lucy Hutch from the Emerson Hospital Nutrition Services Dept. will explain the best way to get the best “bang for your buck” in terms of food costs and nutrition. This talk will be focused on promoting improved health through good nutrition without breaking your household budget and helping you and your family to improve your quality of life.

YOUNG EAGLES FLIGHT RALLY
All those between ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies on Saturday, September 12, from 9am to 12pm, as EAA Chapter 196 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at Minute Man Airfield, 302 Boxboro Rd. Registration takes place next to Nancy’s Airfield Café. Pilots at the event will also explain more about their airplanes, allowing young people to discover how airplanes work and how pilots ensure safety is the prime concern before every flight.

Performance to Benefit Autism
The On Your Toes Dance & Theater Company are holding a Benefit Concert at Hale Middle School on Sept. 12 at 6PM.  A Bake Sale will be held after the performances.  On Your Toes Vocalists and Dancers will perform award winning routines to support Autism Awareness. All proceeds will go to Autism charities. Donations accepted at the door.

First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC), Unitarian Universalist, will host an open house in its Community Room on Saturday, September 12, from 10am to 12pm. Come meet FPC’s minister, Rev. Tom Rosiello; welcoming and membership coordinator Joleen Sullivan; Director of Religious Education Michelle Cote; and Director of Music Mike Pfitzer. Light refreshments will be served. Child care will be provided. FPC’s facilities are wheelchair accessible.

FPC’s apple pies are back! It’s time again for our famous apple pies to be sold on Saturdays and Sundays, from Saturday, September 12, through the date of our Harvest Fair, Saturday, October 3. The apple pie stand is located at the front of the church grounds. Sales will begin at 10am and will close when the day’s pies are sold. Apples for the pies have been generously donated by Shelburne Farm of Stow.

On September 13, FPC will begin its church year with its annual Ingathering Sunday. On this day, FPC returns to more traditional services in the sanctuary. It also returns to its regular schedule of two services at 9 and 11am. All are welcome. Child care is provided for children 3 and under and older children are welcome to attend religious education classes.

Publishing Networking Group
The next Publishing Networking Group Meeting will be Saturday, September 12, 10:30am, at the Randall Library. This will be a networking and planning meeting. Please bring your ideas for guest speakers and/or topics.

Birds and Wildlife: A Photographic Passion
A photographic exhibit by Westford wildlife photographer Sandy Selesky is on display now through the end of September at Nancy’s Airfield Café, 302 Boxborough Rd. Meet the artist and enjoy free refreshments there on September 13 between 3–4:30pm at a public reception. Sandy is former President and now Print Coordinator at the Nashoba Valley Photo Club in Westford and has been passionate about bird and wildlife photography for over 30 years. She has traveled widely, including trips to the Galapagos and Falkland islands, and has won numerous awards in New England and international competitions.

Stow Cub Scout Pack 39 will be holding its first pack meeting of the year on Monday, September 14, from 6:30pm – 8:00pm in the Center School Cafeteria, 403 Great Rd. Boys entering grades 1 through 5 interested in joining Cub Scouts are welcome to join us for a free pizza and popcorn party, with pizza being served at 6:30pm.

Stow Fall Soccer – Pre-K and Kindergarten
Fall soccer registration is now open for Stow boys and girls born between 9/1/09 and 4/1/11. Munchkins (Pre-K) and Transitions (K) will meet on Saturday mornings with an emphasis on fun and teamwork. college planning for the community
The Nashoba Regional High School Guidance Office Senior College Planning Night on Wednesday, September 16, 6:30pm, at the NRHS Auditorium. Guidance counselors will be present to answer questions about the “nuts and bolts” of the college application process.

There also will be a presentation and college fair, featuring the transition to college for students with learning differences, on Wednesday, September 30, 6pm, in the Auditorium. “The best college fit for a successful transition” will be presented.

NRHS is located at 12 Green Rd., Bolton.

OARS River Cleanup – Join Us!
The Organization for the Assabet River will hold its 29th Annual River Cleanup on Saturday, September 19, from 9am to 12 noon. OARS volunteers will wade into the Assabet, Sudbury, and Concord rivers and tributaries to continue the effort to restore our beautiful rivers. Trash, tires, bottles, car parts, bicycles – whatever we find that shouldn’t be there – will be collected for more appropriate disposal. There is lots of work to be done.

This September morning of dirty, satisfying work has become a regional tradition for individuals and teams from local businesses, civic associations, scout troops, and high schools.  We will be working this year in Westborough, Northborough, Framingham, Wayland, Sudbury, Marlborough, Hudson, Stow, Maynard, Acton, Concord, and Billerica. The cleanup will be followed by a pizza lunch and celebration along the rivers.

stow women’s club open house
The  Stow Women’s Club is hosting an open house for prospective members on Friday, September 25, from 7 – 9:30pm, at 531 Great Rd. (yellow house next door to the former Pompositticutt School). There will a short business meeting focussed on suggestions/preliminary plans for club events during the autumn and the early winter months, such as our Progressive Dinner in October and our Breakfast With Santa fundraiser in December. Refreshments will be served with plenty of time reserved for mixing and mingling.

For 48 years the Stow Women’s Club has offered Stow women opportunities for socialization as well as for charitable work.  Some of our recent activities included a floral arranging class, a visit to a Boston art museum, a comedy club outing, a jewelry making class, and a walk to raise money for breast cancer research. We represent all ages and backgrounds with a common goal of giving back to our community and having fun in the process.

ANNIE SULLIVAN, Helen Keller’s TEACHER, at Old West School House
Join us on Sunday, September 27, 3-4 pm, at the Old West Schoolhouse Museum, for an enjoyable and informative living history program presented by award-winning actor Kate Carney as she portrays “Annie Sullivan, Helen’s Teacher”. Annie’s style is interactive; she asks and answers questions at the end. This program has won raves at the Perkins School for the Blind; the International Women Playwrights Conference in Ireland; and at schools, museums, and diversity, inclusiveness, and disability conferences.

The Old West Schoolhouse is located at the intersections of Harvard and Hiley Brook roads. Sponsored by the Stow Historical Society and the Stow Historical Commission, the program also is sponsored in part by a grant from the Stow Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

The Stow Lions Club Annual Fall Flea Market will be held October 3 at the Stow Lions Field (at the intersection of Route 117 and Hudson Road).  The rain date is Sunday, October 4. The Flea Market opens at 7am; admission is free. The Flea Market  always attracts a high volume of customers and vendors, with a wide selection of goods, collectibles, tools, decorator items, books, coins, leather goods, and just plain old good stuff!
