STOW DEMOCRATS TO MEET
The Stow Democratic Town Committee will meet on Wednesday, September 24, at 7:15pm, on the second floor of the Randall Library. Topics  for discussion will include  the fall campaigns for state  and local offices, and follow-up of  programs  and  actions   from spring 2014. Henry Beston’s Cape Cod, September 25, 7pm – Don Wilding from the Henry Beston Society will speak about the enormous literary and cultural influence Henry Beston had on America with the publication of his book The Outermost House. Mr. Wilding’s presentation will trace how The Outermost House helped create the Cape Cod National Seashore, as well as how it had as profound an influence on nature writing as Thoreau’s Walden.

Launch at the Library!! Special Children’s Event Saturday, September 27, 2pm  -Ms Morrison has a special event planed for kids of all ages. Come make helicopters, rockets, paper airplanes, catapults, and more. Learn about how things fly and the best way to design the perfect flying machine.

SCOTTISH DANCE IN STOW
The first Stow fall class of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society will take place on Friday, September 26, at the Stow Town Hall. Scottish Country Dancing is the much older version of our Contra Dancing and is quite social. Partners are not needed.  Soft-soled shoes are recommended. There will be a Children’s Class beginning at 7pm and an Adult/Teen Beginner’s Class at 7:30pm. Social Dancing begins at 8pm. All are welcome to join this enjoyable and social dance form. Please join us.

Fresh Baked Apple Pies Available This Weekend
They’re back! The First Parish Church of Stow and Acton, is once again offering our famous apple pies on Saturdays and Sundays, now through October 4. The Apple Pie Stand is located at the church, 353 Great Rd., at the intersection of Routes 117 and 62. Sales will begin at 10am and will close when the day’s pies are sold. Annual Stow Fire Chicken BBQ
The Stow Fire Dept.’s annual Chicken BBQ wil take place Sunday, September 28, 11am to 1pm, at the Stow Fire Dept., 16 Crescent St. Pre-order information will be posted on Facebook along with an advance menu. Please note that electronic payments will be accepted through PayPal and Google Wallet.  That Information will be posted with the advance menu. Proceeds benefit the Stow Firefighters Assn. Come and have a good time as we transition into fall.

BASKETBALL REGISTRATION FOR 2014-15 NOW OPEN
SYBA (Stow Youth Basketball Association) is now accepting registrations for the 2014-15 season for both the Bomber’s Basketball program (Gr. 1-2) and the Stow Recreation Baskeball program (Gr. 3-8). Go to www.stowhoops.org to register. Deadline is September 30.

Hale Middle School Council Seeking Community Member
The Hale Middle School Council is looking for a community member interested in participating in the School Council. The School Council serves as an advisory board to the principal of the school, develops and reviews the School Improvement Plan, and provides feedback on other topics (e.g. handbook, annual school survey). The community member must be a Stow resident, and cannot be a parent/guardian of a current Hale Middle School student or an employee of the Nashoba Regional School District. The School Council meets once a month while school is in session, usually the second Thursday of the month, from 4:30 – 5:30pm at Hale.  Interested parties should contact Principal George King via email, [email protected], by September 30. Please indicate why you would like to be a member of the council.

TOUR APPLEFIELD WITH THE STOW GARDEN CLUB
The Stow Garden Club will be meeting on Wednesday, October 1, at 4pm for a tour of Applefield Farm on Rt. 117 in Stow. Kirstin Mong, owner, will host the group and present how their successful business is managed, including growing and harvesting of vegetables, flowers, and other merchandise. She will be able to answer gardening questions. Come celebrate the beauty of gardening with us. Pizza and cider will be served at the Union Church immediately following the tour. Harvey Leonard is Coming to Stow
Local weather expert Harvey Leonard, chief meteorologist for WCVB (Channel 5), will be giving a presentation in Stow on Wednesday, October 1, about extreme weather and the effects it can have on communities. The event, hosted by the Stow Medical Reserve Corp and the Board of Health, will begin at 7:30pm,with a brief discussion about sheltering at home, creating 72-hour kits for people and pets, and the MRC’s role in running a community shelter, if there is a need. Stow Area Parents Network Scavenger Hunt
SAPN invites all local children who plan to enter kindergarten in the fall of 2015 to the quarterly Pre-K Playgroupa playgroup on Friday, October 3, 3:30pm, at Wolbach Farm/Sudbury Valley Trustees (18 Wolbach Rd., Sudbury). Children are invited with their caregivers to meet some future classmates. This event is open to the public, and SAPN membership is not required. Join us for a scavenger hunt, an outdoor game, and a snack. Siblings are welcome.  This is a free event that will be hosted rain or shine. 145th Harvest Fair at First Parish Church
Come to the 145th annual Harvest Fair on  Saturday, October 4, 10am-3pm, at the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton. Featured will be all types of homemade baked goods and preserves, as well as handcrafted gift items and cards. A full lunch and snacks will be served, and our famous apple pies will be available. A large variety of videos and CDs will be available, as well as books and retro jewelry. A special children’s area will include the popular “moon bounce” and fun new games. New this year will be the “White Boutique,” a collection of nicer treasures such as you would find in a consignment shop. Try your luck in the 50/50 raffle while you’re there, and enjoy listening to the great musical groups that will perform.

Stow Lions Annual Fall Flea Market, Saturday, October 4
Free parking, doors open at 8am. Stow Lions Field is located at the Intersection of Route 117 and Hudson Road. Coffee and donuts early, and during the day plenty of hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, water, and soda. This year look for the Christmas table with lots of good stuff! The Stow Lions Golf Ball Drop will be held at 3pm, be sure to get your ticket…

Storyteller at Stow’s West School House Museum
Sunday, October 5, from 3-4pm, please join us for an afternoon of Stories of New England at Stow’s West School House Museum. Master storyteller and vocalist Todd Goodwin will ignite the audience’s imagination as he transports us to different places in time and space.

Todd will weave stories and songs (accompanied by the harmonica) to capture the delight of young and old in a multi-generational program (ages 5 and up), featuring New England Stories from colonial times to the 1960s.
Refreshments will follow.    This event is the fourth and last of a series of programming presented jointly by the Stow Historical Commission and the Stow Historical Society.

The West School is located at the interection of Harvard and Hiley Brook roads. Convenient parking is across the road. This program is sponsored in part by a grant from the Stow Cultural Council which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Stow Postal Pantry Food Drive
The Stow Food Pantry will hold its annual “Share the Bounty” Postal Pantry Food Drive the week of October 6-11. The Stow Food Pantry receives most of its food donations during the  Postal Pantry – placed in owners’ mailboxes and picked up by the mail carriers -along with many of its financial donations.

NRHS Band Concert INTRODUCES NEW BAND DIRECTOR
Presented by Nashoba Friends of Music. Back to school! Introducing Mr. Joseph McCarthy, Nashoba Regional High School’s new Band Director. Joseph McCarthy has created a lively, interesting program of music for you on Tuesday, October 14, at 7pm. Come  out and meet our new band director and see our talented children. He has so many wonderful things in store for the program! There will be performances by the Concert and Jazz bands. Admission is $5, with students and seniors free. Refreshments will be served.

NASHOBA GIRLS LACROSSE SPRING 2014 REGISTRATION
Spring Registration will open on or about October 15 for current players, and will close October 31. Beginning November 1, registration will also be open to the general public until November 30. A discount will be offered to those players who register before November 25. Team sizes will be limited. We are able to offer only one team per age group.  NGL will be holding an informational open meeting on October 24, 7pm, at Slater’s Restaurant, 356 Main St., Bolton. Current NGL families, as well as anyone with questions about our program, are encouraged to attend. We are in need of a Secretary and Registrar. Rummage Sale OctOBER 24 & 25
The Union Church of Stow will be holding its fall rummage sale on Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25.  Doors open at 9am each day. Save the Date:  Stow Flu Clinic October 25!
Flu season is coming! The Stow Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), under the direction of the
Board of Health (BoH), has scheduled a Flu Clinic to administer vaccine for influenza from
9am to 1 pm, Saturday, October 25, at the Hale School. Only the injectable form of vaccine will be available (i.e., there will be no intranasal option), and the vaccine can be administered to individuals 3 years of age and older (families with infants and toddlers should request vaccine from their pediatrician’s office).  Cost for vaccination will be covered by insurance and/or Medicare.  If you have questions, you can contact the Board of Health by calling 978-897-4592 or by sending an email to [email protected].

CRAFTERS WANTED FOR COA HOLIDAY FAR
Crafters are wanted for ther Annual Holiday Craft Fair sponsored by The Stow Friends of the Council on Aging, to be held on Saturday, November 1,  9am to 3pm, at St. Isidore Church, 429 Great Rd. We are opening our annual craft fair to include a select group of juried crafters. Booths are 8’ by 10’ for $40 each. There will also be food, senior crafts, and a bake sale. We attract a large attendance and are always well supported b  Stow residents as well as visitors from adjoining towns. We will advertise in local newspapers as well as posting ads at local merchants, and will display a street banner. Annual Harvest Festival to Benefit Emerson’s Pediatric Care
On Saturday, September 27, from 11 am – 3 pm, Verrill Farm will be transformed into an old-fashioned fair ground for the 8th Annual Harvest Festival and Benefit for the Pediatric Intervention Team at Emerson Hospital. The event features games, music, food, a raffle, and the search for the perfect pumpkin in the pick-your-own fields.

Proceeds from the Harvest Festival are used by Emerson Hospital’s Pediatric Intervention Team to create and distribute age-appropriate kits to all children treated at the hospital. The kits contain comfort items and activities that are used to help children and caregivers cope successfully with the hospital experience. To date, the Harvest Festival has raised more than $82,800 for the Coping Kits.

22nd Annual Maynard Community Fest
Presented by the Assabet Valley Chamber of Commerce, Maynard Fest takes place Saturday, September 27, 9am – 3:30pm, in downtown Maynard. Free family entertainment, over 110 vendors and nonprofits, Audubon animals, and more. Events take place rain or shine, with free parking at Clock Tower Place.

Used Book Sale at Maynard Public Library
The Friends of the Maynard Public Library will hold its annual used book sale Saturday, September 27, 10am to 3pm; and Sunday, September 28, 12noon to 3pm, as part of Maynard Fest. There will be thousands of books for adults and children, including fiction, cookbooks, self-help, travel, history, gardening, and mysteries. DVDs and music CDs will also be available. Free Child Safety and Wellness Training AT CLINTON HOSPITAL
Back by popular demand, Clinton Hospital’s Community Benefits Dept. is offering a free American Red Cross child safety course for anyone between ages 11 and 15. The course takes place in Conference Rooms A and B at Clinton Hospital, 201 Highland St., Clinton. Classes are held Saturdays, September 27 and October 4, from 10am to 1pm. Participants must attend both classes and pass an exam to earn a certificate of completion.

The two-day courses give youths the knowledge and confidence to care for infants and school-age children. Combining video, activities, hands-on skill training, and discussion for a complete learning experience, this program teaches such skills as how to respond to emergencies and illnesses with first aid, rescue breathing, and other appropriate care; recognizing safety and hygiene issues; feeding, diapering, and caring for infants; and starting a baby-sitting business through workforce development.
