Knowing how even the threat of thunder and lightning can cause a two-week power outage in Lunenburg, the first

question most people asked me after the Blizzard was, “Did you lose power?” And shockingly, the answer is no. Not even a flicker. We were all ready, pretty much assuming it was going to happen, and went to bed Friday night, surprised we still had power and  just wondering what time we’d waken to the sound of silence in a dark house. Considering the magnitude of the storm, many of us, including here in Stow, were fortunate to have been spared more than just the aggravation of a whole lotta snow. Of course, many people feel differently about the snow and have likely enjoyed the whole experience. I am not among them. But I do feel for the people in the coastal and southeastern areas that really got hit hard.

One of the worst things about the storm for several of us here at the Independent, was the fact that we couldn’t get to the New England Newspaper and Press Association’s annual conference held on Friday and Saturday in Boston. They had a number of good presentations scheduled this year and we were really looking forward to spending some time with other newspaper professionals and getting new ideas and information. Despite the weather and travel ban, they did hold the conference, so there won’t be anything rescheduled, which didn’t make us too happy, either. There’s always next year, I guess.

In the meantime, we didn’t reschedule the paper either, so here we are. Nancy was able to take a ride in a plow truck, giving readers a bird’s eye view from behind the plow. Ann spent some time with the dogs at the COA and Ellen, as always, keeps us up-to-date with the sports happenings.

I heard from the folks that are rehabbing the house that was featured on last week’s front page. It turns out, according to Dana Lemelin, that she and fiancee David Ellis have heard from a lot of people expressing curiousity about their plans. Nancy spent some time with them and brings us the scoop.
I see a lot of white out my windows. Anyone else looking forward to Spring?
