The Independent Clause

Reading through this week’s paper, you may find yourself thinking you’re reading Nature Weekly News. We’ve got fish, coyotes, a nature program, and heck, there’s even a baseball story about “The Bird”! While not totally intentional – it just happened to be the grouping of stories that came together – I think there’s a lot of really interesting material, even for a non-nature lover.

Our front page photo may come as a surprise to some who haven’t driven in that area of town recently. As part of the expansion of Pilot Grove Apartments, a chunk of the hill across from Pilot Grove Farm (no relation to the Apartments or the expansion project) on West Acton Road was recently clear cut to make way for the installation of an expanded septic system. Additional clearing will occur to make way for 32 new housing units. This project was partially funded by the Town’s CPA funds for Affordable Housing, after approval at Town Meeting several years ago. We will have more on the status of the project in next week’s issue.

With August just around the corner, subscribers beware! Many subscriptions are running out at the end of the month, so get those renewals in now so you don’t miss an issue. And, of course, you will be entered to win a $50 gift card to Shaw’s in the process. Check your subscription label for your expiration date, located after your name.

And we’re beginning to think Back-to-School, as premature as that may feel at this point in the summer. Wish we could stretch it out longer, but the kids are going back in 4 short weeks. For some, that’s likely a relief! For others, maybe not so much. But either way, we’ll be there to help you prepare for the inevitable.

If you have a home-based business that relates to back-to-school classes or assistance, please contact us to see how you can be part of our low cost Back-to-School Service Directory advertising section.

Well, my son’s summer camp time has come and gone and football practice is starting this week. We’ll start the season seeking shade and carrying tons of water. We’ll end the season likely shivering in our winter coats under a blanket. One year, the final game was played in a snowstorm. It just seems so hard to believe how quickly that time will pass and we’ll be on to the Holidays before we know it.

As I watch my youngest go from boy to young man, I just want to slow it all down a little. I’m trying to remain in the moment and simply enjoy today. I know we can still sneak in a camping trip and there are plenty of warm days left.

But there are no days left when I will walk my child to the bus stop for the first time or hold one of their hands crossing the street.  All my kids are taller than me (not that that’s saying much) and many of those “firsts” have passed me by. Although  I can enjoy them again through my grandchildren’s eyes, it’s not quite the same. Anyone have a magical button that slows down time? Yah, I didn’t think so…
