HABITAT NCM HOSTS ‘THE FINEST HOURS’
On Aug. 24 at 5:30pm at the Randall Library, Habitat for Humanity NCM will host a showing of The Finest Hours. The movie depicts a Coast Guard rescue off Cape Cod and Stow’s own Ed Mason was one of the servicemen sent to save those aboard two sinking ships. Ed Mason is also part of the Habitat NCM Critical Home Repair program, and crews will be at his home in Stow during August and early September. Come learn more about Ed’s amazing life of service, Habitat’s Critical Home Repair program and Local Project Committees, and how you can get involved in Habitat’s mission of bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Last tHursday cruise-in/fly-in night Aug. 25
In cooperation with EAA #196, Friends of Minute Man Air Field, and Nancy’s at the Airfield Cafe, the Rotary Clubs of Nashoba Valley, Acton-Boxborough, and Maynard are holding their fourth annual Wings & Wheels program, a summer-long cruise-in/fly-in event at the Minute Man Air Field (302 Boxborough Rd.). The last event  for the season will be held Thursday August 25 from 5pm to 8pm .

Each week features different makes of cars; however, all cars are welcome to cruise to the air field every week. The event also features a fly-in for airplanes. eashed pets are allowed. The event also features great food. Admission is free with donations requested. Proceeds will benefit local and international Rotary service projects, such as local scholarships and high school programs, senior citizen projects, and international health and relief programs.

stow bike for the woods
The 15th annual Stow Bike for the Woods is taking place Sun., Aug. 28. This is a family-friendly road-bike ride in support of the Stow Conservation Trust. Registration starts at 8:30am, ride at 9am. The ride starts in front of the Randall Library. You can register for the ride and get more information at http://bikeforthewoods.org. We will have food and drink including fresh peaches, cider donuts, and our famous mid-ride lemonade stand.   Choose from a variety of ride lengths including 5, 14, 28, 35, 48, and a 65-mile metric century. All ages and abilities are welcome. The well-marked routes take you through many of the conservation properties in the area. The Stow Conservation Trust aims to preserve open space for future generations. All proceeds from the ride go to the Trust.

Sacred Geography, Hinduism & Thoreau at FPC
A service on “Sacred Geography and the Influence of Hinduism on Thoreau” will be offered at First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC), Unitarian Universalist, on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 10am. Rev. Tom Rosiello will lead the service. “Are there places of natural beauty and wonder that feel sacred to you?” asks Rev. Rosiello. “Where you feel connected to something greater? Maybe you even visited them this summer? The idea that there’s a sacred relationship between people and part of their environment is not new to our theology.”   The service will be held in FPC’s sanctuary, with music provided by pianist/organist Sanghee Kim. Child care will be provided. FPC is located at 353 Great Rd. Its facilities are wheelchair accessible.

Sing with Sounds of Stow Chorus and Orchestra
Singers!  Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience the exciting world of Berlioz’s choral music, with full orchestral accompaniment! Artistic Director and Conductor Barbara Jones has selected Berlioz’s “Messe Solennelle.” The music is alternately dramatic, intimate, challenging – and fun! The concert will be on Sunday Nov. 20, at 3pm.  Open rehearsals are Monday nights at the First Parish Church, 353 Great Rd., beginning on Monday, Aug. 29, from 7:30-9:30pm. Participation in the SATB chorus is open to all—no auditions required—and offers the opportunity to learn exciting music in a supportive atmosphere. August Council on Aging Trips
The John Adams Courthouse in Boston will be our destination on Aug. 31. This Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court opened in 1894. See the Great Hall and two exhibit rooms. Lunch afterward on your own.  Register early! You must pay at the Council on Aging, 380 Great Rd., Basement Level, to register.  Out-of-towners may register on a wait list basis. Open Houses at First Parish Church
First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC), Unitarian Universalist, will be holding two open houses in September for those looking for a new spiritual home. The first will be held on Thursday, Sept. 1, from 7 to 9pm. The second will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10am to 12pm. Saturday’s open house will be geared towards families looking for a good religious education program for their children, but all are welcome to attend either open house.  FPC is a liberal church with a vibrant community. Guest Table Community Supper
Guest Table, a community supper in Stow, serves dinner from 5:30 to 6:30pm on the first Friday of each month at First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC). Guest Table welcomes everyone, in or out of Stow, whether they’re looking for a sense of community, are feeling lonely, are having financial difficulties, or just want a change of atmosphere. There’s no charge for dinner, but donations are gratefully accepted. Dinners will be nut free, with gluten-free and dairy-free options available.

The next meal will be offered on Sept. 2 from 5:30 to 6:30 at FPC’s Fellowship Hall. FPC is located at 353 Great Rd. Its facilities are wheelchair accessible. For more information, contact [email protected]. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Stow Community Chest.

STOW GARDEN CLUB LAUNCHES ITS YEAR
The Stow Garden Club will begin their 2016-2017 program year on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7pm at the Union Church. As we regather to announce the coming year program over desserts, we will discuss how to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Club in February 2017.  Non-members are free to attend this meeting and learn what the club does for the community in the manner of civic beautification programs, scholarships and educational opportunities. Hear about stow’s planned park
On Sept. 15 at 7:30pm in Town Building, the Recreation Commission, Conservation Commission, Open Space Committee and Stow Conservation Trust are co-hosting a public forum to discuss plans for the proposed Town Center Park at 323 Great Rd. (behind Union Church).  This will be an opportunity to provide feedback on preliminary design plans, and on what activities and facilities you think should be a priority at the park. ALICE EATON FUND SEEKS GRANT APPLICATIONS
In 1992, Alice Eaton, a former resident of Stow, bequeathed funds for the purpose of improving the health, safety and enrichment of Stow children, from birth through age 12. The Alice Eaton Fund Committee is currently seeking grant applications from organizations with projects consistent with the Fund’s mission. The application deadline is Sept. 19. Yes, we do have a women’s club in Stow!

In fact, the Stow Women’s Club is hosting an open house for new members on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 4:30pm. Refreshments will be served with plenty of time for introductions, mixing and mingling. We’ll also have a short business meeting to project club events for autumn and winter. For 49 years the Stow Women’s Club has offered Stow women opportunities to make friends, socialize, and support charitable programs. Past activities included a Progressive Dinner, a floral arranging class, visits to a Boston and other local museums, a comedy club outing, and an annual Breakfast with Santa fundraiser. We represent all ages and backgrounds with a common goal of giving back and having fun in the process.
