UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE RANDALL LIBRARY

Summer Reading Programs – Reading during the summer will be tons of fun this year at the Randall Library. Children have three programs to choose from; the Listening Club (children who can’t read by themselves yet), Reading Club (active readers), or Young Adult programs. Participants who spend time listening to or reading books this summer not only receive prizes for the time they put into it, but they also receive raffle tickets for items. Raffle items include a private plane ride around Stow (leaving from the Minuteman Airfield, courtesy of the EAA’s Young Eagles program), a Razor Scooter, and an iPod Shuffle. Many of the raffle prizes have been made available through the generosity of the Randall Library Friends Organization.

Adults can also enjoy benefits from the Randall Library’s summer reading program this year and play “Summer Reading Bingo”. While using all the different fun services the Randall Library has to offer, adults can gain points on special Randall Library bingo cards (available when you sign up) and gain opportunities for raffle chances. Participants must be at least 21 years old. Prizes include a Trader Joe’s gift basket, $10 gift certificates to Nancy’s Airfield Café of Stow, a night at the Amerscot Bed and Breakfast of Stow, and many more!

WALKING TOUR OF HISTORIC GLEASONDALE VILLAGE
On Sunday, July 13, at 3pm, the Stow Historical Commission and Stow Historical Society are sponsoring a walking tour around the historic mill village of Gleasondale – weather permitting.

Parking is available at the empty lot enclosed by the chain link fence near 459 Gleasondale Road. The tour will begin from this lot location.

NEW BOOK CLUB MEETNG
The next meeting of the New Book Club will be Tues., July 15, 7pm, at Randall Library.  Erik Larson’s book, The Devil in the White City, is our pick for July. This No.1 New York Times bestseller is about the architect who led the construction of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 and the serial killer who used the fair as a lure.  The book won an Edgar Award for best crime writing, and was a finalist for a National Book Award.  Questions…..call 978-897-2720.

NASHOBA COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP SAYS GET OUT AND EXPLORE!
Nashoba Community Partnership for Children invites you to join us this spring and summer as we GET OUTDOORS & EXPLORE! All ages are welcome.

At Randall Library, Stow, there will be a Teddy Bear Picnic on Wednesday, July 16, at 11am. Bring lunch, a blanket, and teddy bear, to participate in stories, songs, and activities. Held rain or shine. On Wednesday, August 13, at  10:30am, Explore Outdoors, as we take a walk and look closely at nature’s wonders. Children will use different magnifiers as they make new scientific discoveries.

In neighboring towns–Story Time In the Park & Planting takes place at Bolton’s Memorial Park Playground, Wattaquadock Hill Rd., Wednesday, June 18, 10:30am. You and your child can StoryWalk through the park and have fun planting seeds. On Thursday, July 31, at 11am, there will be a Teddy Bear Picnic at Lancaster’s Thayer Library, Main St., Lancaster Town Green. And on Thursday, August 21, at 10:30am, Lancaster hosts Explore Outdoors at the Thayer Library.

ANN’S FRIENDSHIP COMMUNITY DINNER AT THE UNION CHURCH OF STOW

Please join us Friday July 18th- 5 to 6PM. It’ll be a cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs, and summer inspired side dishes & dessert! There’s no reason to eat alone when you can join us for friendly company. Whether you are new in town or have been here a while, you are invited. Come alone or bring your family. Although there is no charge, donations are accepted. STOW FIRE RESCUE’S WASH THE FIRE TRUCK DAY

Cool fun on a hot day.  On Sunday, August 3rd, Stow Fire Rescue will be holding its annual fun fundraising event at the Stow Fire Station.The $5 per child admission ($20 max. per family…no charge for adults) allows kids to wash a fire truck, jump on the moon bounces, get their temporary tattoos and explore the rescue vehicles.  The Slush Lady will be stopping by…priced separately.  Proceeds will go toward fire fighting training materials and the firefighters’ relief fund.  Rain date to be determined if necessary.  Please come say “Hi” to Sparky the Fire Dog and join us from 11 AM to 1 pm.  For more information call 978-897-4537.

WEST SCHOOL OPEN HOUSES

The 2014 programming also includes 1) Sunday, August 10, the West School House Open House; 2) Sunday, September 7th, the Back to School program; and 3) Sunday, October 5, Storyteller Todd Goodwin’s Stories of New England.

All events begin at 3PM and are run jointly by the Stow Historical Commission and the Stow Historical Society. The Stow West School is located on Harvard Road at the intersection with Hiley Brook Road.  Convenient parking is across the road. These programs are sponsored in part by a grant from the Stow Cultural Council which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

St. Isidore Parish is pleased to offer our Vacation Bible School again this summer!  Our “Weird Animals” adventure begins on Monday, August 11 and ends on Thursday, August 14.  Each day runs from 9:30 – 12:30, and there is an evening session for children and parents on Thursday, August 14 from 6:30 – 8:00.  The cost is $30 per child, with a maximum of $90 per family.  The week is open to children aged 4 by September 1 through those entering 6th grade in the fall.

UPCOMING ARTISANS FAIR & LOCAL ARTISANS WANTED

The Lake Boon Association is hosting its annual “Lake Boon Artisans Fair” on Sat, 23-Aug-201410am-3:30pm at the beautiful Pine Bluffs Recreation Area, as part of the fun-filled 2014 Water Carnival weekend.  Shoppers mark your calendars to come support your talented neighbors by buying wonderful hand-crafted items!  We are also looking for additional local artisans to sell, and are asking for a nominal donation from each artisan ($10 for Lake Boon Assoc. members, $15 for non-members) to reserve a space.  Artisans will need to provide their own table/display for selling.  Space is limited so please contact us soon for more information.  Call or email Kris (978-430-4109[email protected] ) or Lynne (978-212-5269[email protected] ).

WATER CHESTNUTS REMOVAL FROM THE ASSABET:  CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!

Come lend a hand to eradicate water chestnuts from the Assabet River between Hudson and Acton (exact locationsTBD). Events are scheduled for:  Saturday, July 12 from 9 am – 1 pm, Tuesday, July 15 from 5 pm – 8:00 pm, and Saturday, July 19 from 9 am – 1 pm. We have limited boats available on a first come first serve basis. If you can bring a canoe, please let us know so we can plan accordingly. We also need some people helping on shore. Wear clothes and shoes/sandals that can get wet & dirty (long sleeves recommended).  Bring hats, sunscreen, and water bottles. SUDBURY VALLEY TRUSTEES MUSHROOM WALK

Memorial Forest, Sudbury & Marlborough. Sunday, July 13, 2014, 1:30 – 4:00 pm. Led by Doug Brown of the BMC.  On the walk participants will collect and then sort their collections for identification.  “Informal” ID sessions will be held on the walk. Walking the trail in groups of mixed experience, attendees will collect representative samples of mushrooms and related fungi.  There is usually lots of informal discussion about mushrooms, fungus ecology, identification techniques, books, and which wild mushrooms taste best.  After the collection, gather together, sort the collection by type, and then participate in a detailed identification talk where BMC’s Identification Committee will explain what the mushrooms are and offer tips for mushroom ID.  This an open discussion session where all mushroom questions are welcome.  No experience necessary, just dress for the weather and a walk in the woods. Co-sponsored with Boston Mycological Club. SVT/BMC Members: Free; Non-members: $10.  Pre-registration is required.  Visit www.svtweb.org or call 978-443-5588.

CONCERT AT THE HEALING GARDEN

Enjoy a Sunday afternoon of amazing music!  The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden announces the next “Concert at the Garden” on Sunday, July 13 at 3:00pm. The Garden welcomes Bill Harriman, solo guitarist, from Indian Hill Music in Littleton. Harriman will play a variety of classical, jazz and folk music. The Healing Garden, a non-profit organization, is located at 145 Bolton Road in Harvard, MA and offers support, educational and therapeutic services to those affected by cancer.  Admission is $10 for Garden members, $15 for non-members (no pre-sale of tickets).  All proceeds benefit the services of the Healing Garden.  Visit www.healinggarden.net for event updates or cancellations.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL CAMP, JULY 14-18, ACTON

Kids ages 3 years through 5th grade are invited to St. Matthew’s Methodist Church in Acton (435 Central Street-just north of Idylwilde) for “Workshop of Wonders: Imagine and Build with God.” Crafts, music, puppets, science, magic, and games will fill the mornings from 9:00 to noon. CLINTON HOSPITAL OFFERS FREE PROGRAM ON ADULT DAY HEALTH SERVICES

Caring for an elderly loved one at home can be a lot of work, but Adult Day Health Services may be able to lighten your load.Clinton Hospital’s Geriatric Medical Psychiatry Program and Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group present a free community education event Friday, July 18 from 10 to 11 am in conference room A at Clinton Hospital, 201 Highland Street, Clinton. Sally Donatti, from The Highlands Adults Day Health Center, presents, “What Are Adult Day Services” in which she details the many offerings this type of program has available including, cost-effective, long-term care alternative, nursing care meals, therapeutic activities, structured environment, personal care assistants, activities staff, respite care for families, social activities, assistance with daily personal care and hygiene, administration of medications, and wound care.

FAMILY WELLNESS FAIR

Start your day with some healthy family fun!   The 3rd annual Family Wellness Fair will be held on Saturday, August 16th, on the Lancaster Town Green from 10 AM-2 PM.  This year’s event features dozens of local businesses and groups offering family health and wellness services.   The event will kick off at 10AM with a 1/2 mile family fun walk.  Bring your walking shoes and get moving as a family!  Learn and explore valuable safety tips from the Lancaster firefighters and police officers.  Come explore a  fire truck and police car!  The 4-H will be demonstrating animal care with local farm animals!   Face painting, Zumba demo, RAD kids self defense demo, healthy foods demo, and more will be offered throughout the day!   Check out the huge raffle display and enter to win fabulous health related products and services!   This Family Wellness Fair is hosted by Corrective Chiropractic and will benefit Karen’s Closet, a nonprofit organization that provides coats, clothing, and other necessities to local schools for students in need.  Free admission!
