Events at the Randall LibrarY
Summer reading programs for kids until  August 18 – Calling all readers and listeners! Do you want to win some fabulous prizes such as a Harry Pottter Marauder’s Map, Horcrux Bookmarks, a Kindle,  an iPod, Lego Minecraft set, or an American Girl Doll? Well, come  in and sign up for our summer Reading and Listening Clubs! The more time you spend reading this summer, the more you increase your chances to be the winner in the prize category of your choice. Also, you can color your own superhero and track your progress and “fly” your hero up and over our “book tower” in the library. Thanks to the Randall Library Friends Association, the Stow Cultural Council (a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency), and DCU Kids for the prizes.

Be a hero with Operation Delta Dog Summer Reading Program until August 18 – Our Summer Reading Programs this year have another great way for kids and adults to make a big impact with time spent reading. This summer, the library will be working in conjunction with Operation Delta Dog (http://www.operationdeltadog.org/) to improve the lives of shelter dogs and U.S. Veterans. You can “pledge to read” and help sponsor the cost of training abandoned dogs to be service animals,  and teaming them up with veterans suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury).

Strategies for an Effective Retirement, Thursday, June 25 , 7pm – What does it really take to retire happily? What are the real challenges financially in meeting your aging needs? Using research conducted at the MIT Aging Labs, Joelle Spear will discuss challenges and solutions for effective retirement planning.

Stow Youth Basketball Annual Meeting
On Wednesday, June 24, at 7:30pm in the Randall Library, the Board of Directors for the SYBA, Stow Youth Basketball Association, will be hosting its annual meeting. We encourage parents of any child who participated in any basketball program in Stow over the last year to attend. It is an opportunity to hear what was accomplished over the last year and what new and exciting ideas this Board has in mind for the upcoming year. Also, any questions, concerns, or future suggestions as a result of the past year may be presented to the Board at this time. Lastly, an election of officers for next year will take place.

Rep. Hogan Office Hours in Stow
State Representative Kate Hogan will be hosting office hours in Stow on Thursday, June 25 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at the Randall Library, 19 Crescent Street, Stow, MA 01775. All are invited to stop by with any questions or ideas.

Rep. Kate Hogan represents the Third Middlesex District, which includes the towns of Hudson, Bolton, Maynard and Stow.  She currently serves as Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Health. She also serves as Co-Chair of the Legislature’s Elder Caucus and Chair of the Library Caucus.

No appointment necessary and meetings will be on a first come, first serve basis. Bicycle Recycle Day in Stow
Any bicycle is a good bicycle, reclaim-reuse! On Saturday June 27, 9am-12pm, we will take Racing, Mountain, Bmx, Cruiser, kids, old/new, at Union Church, 317 Great Rd. Our aim is to keep bicycles from being destroyed when they can be reused. Too many bicycles get throw away or end up at the transfer station in the scrap metal pile. There is no cost, and your old or new bicycle unwanted bicycle will get a new home. If you are not able to drop your bicycle/s off, please call and we will pick it up.

John Calabria Leads Yoga Service at FPC
Yoga instructor John Calabria will lead the service at First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC) on Sunday, June 28, at 10am. Mr. Calabria will share thoughts about the practice of yoga to balance mind, body, and spirit. Note that this is not a yoga class. The service will be held in the Community Room and there will be signs leading to that room. FPC is located at 353 Great Rd  Its facilities are wheelchair accessible. Child care is provided. NASHOBA YOUTH FOOTBALL AND CHEER NEEDS YOU!
Our program is looking for students who will be in grades 1 – 8 (2nd grade for football) in September. Come experience a great sport, where kids learn how to work as a team and experience the pride and accomplishment that goes with football and cheerleading. Household Goods hosting open house for prospective volunteers
Household  Goods Inc.,  a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization that provides furniture and household items free of charge to needy individuals and families, is looking to recruit additional volunteers. Household Goods will be hosting an open house for new and prospective volunteers on Wednesday, June 24, from 7-8:30pm, at 530 Main St. in Acton. Volunteers are key to every aspect of the organization, from assisting clients to providing administrative help. Household Goods especially needs volunteers who can make a regular commitment, such as weekly, biweekly or even monthly. If you can lift a pencil or a sofa, Household Goods could use your help.

REFUGE FLEDGLING HOUR AT ASSABET RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
This nature-themed program series at the Visitor Center will include crafts, stories, and games or songs that will relate to a different topic each month. The next event is Friday, June 26, at 10:30am. Programs will be held the 4th Friday of every month 10:30am – 11:30am for 2 to 5 year olds; siblings welcome. River’s Edge Players Presents Cabaret
The provocative Tony Award-winning musical revival of Cabaret continues the River’s Edge Arts Alliance Season of Compassion. This updated and more provocative version of the original gained huge popularity, with Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson in the lead roles, and is still going strong. The scene is the “Kit Kat Klub” in Berlin as the 1920s are drawing to a close. The Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience, assuring them that whatever their troubles, they will forget them at the Cabaret. Musical numbers include Willkommen, Cabaret, Mein Herr, Maybe This Time, The Money Song, and Two Ladies. Music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.

Performances will take place June 26 and 27 at 7:30pm, and on Sunday, June 28, at 2pm, at the air-conditioned and wheelchair-accessible Hudson High School auditorium. This show is for mature audiences only. Tickets are $16 for Adult Non-Members and $14 for Seniors/Students 13+. Tickets for Members are $14 for adults and $12 for Seniors/Students 13+. men of mystery at maynard library
On Tuesday, June 30, at 7pm, the Maynard Library will be hosting three mystery and thriller writers whose books are quite different but all gripping reads – Joseph Finder, author of The Fixer, Michael Ponsor, author of The Hanging Judge, and Steve Ulfelder, author of Wolverine Bros. Freight and Storage. The event is free and open to the public. The library is located at 77 Nason St., Maynard.

St. Matthew’s Offering Vacation Bible School in Acton
Vacation Bible School at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church follows the format of a half-day camp, keeping the children active and engaged by guiding them through a variety of short sessions each day – including drama, music, crafts, and indoor and outdoor play. St. Matthew’s offers Vacation Bible School each summer to the youngest members of the local community (ages 3 years old through 5th grade) to reinforce their understanding that they are loved and that there is a place where they belong.
This year’s program takes place July 13-17. Fees are $40/child or $60/family for the program, which runs Monday through Friday, 9am to 12noon. The program is open to all children of all faiths and denominations, with many children attending from outside the St. Matthew’s congregation.   St. Matthew’s is located at 435 Central St., Acton (between Rte. 2 and Idylwilde Farm).
