Fresh Baked Apple Pies Available This Weekend
They’re back!  The First Parish Church of Stow and Acton, is once again offering our famous apple pies on Saturdays and Sundays, from now through Harvest Fair, October 4.  The Apple Pie Stand is located at the church at 353 Great Road, at the intersection of Routes 117 and 62.  Sales will begin at 10 am and will close when the day’s pies are sold.  For further information, call the church at 978-897-8149 or visit www.fpc-stow-acton.org.  Apples for the pies have been generously donated by Shelburne Farm of Stow.

Henry Beston’s Cape Cod, September 25, 7pm – Don Wilding from the Henry Beston Society will speak about the enormous literary and cultural influence Henry Beston had on America with the publication of his book The Outermost House. Mr. Wilding’s presentation will trace how The Outermost House helped create the Cape Cod National Seashore, as well as how it had as profound an influence on nature writing as Thoreau’s Walden.

Launch at the Library!!-Special Children’s Event Saturday, September 27, 2pm  -Ms Morrison has a special event planed for kids of all ages. Come make helicopters, rockets, paper airplanes, catapults, and more. Learn about how things fly and the best way to design the perfect flying machine.

Rep. Hogan Announces Office Hours in Stow
State Representative Kate Hogan will be hosting office hours in Stow on Wednesday, September 17, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, at Emma’s Cafe, 117 Great Rd., Stow. All are invited to stop by with any questions or ideas.

Rep. Kate Hogan represents the Third Middlesex District, which includes the towns of Hudson, Bolton, Maynard, and Stow.

Ann’s Friendship Community Dinner
Our next dinner open to the public will be Friday, September 19, 5-6pm, at the Union Church of Stow. The meal is free, but donations are accepted. The food will be good and the fellowship even better, so mark your calendars.

This dinner will also feature “Guess how much???” A good-sized bucket of change has been donated to us by an individual who wants to help support the dinners. There will be Shaw’s gift certificates for those who guess the total amount, the number of quarters, the number of dimes, and the number of nickels and pennies. The closest guesses win gift certificates.

Building Dedication Celebration Events for First Parish Church: Free and Open to the Public
The First Parish Church of Stow and Acton is hosting a weekend full of FREE events, Sept. 19-21, to celebrate the dedication of their new “Connector” Building. Everyone is invited to come and celebrate with us.  Friday, 9/19:  “Strings and Pipes” at 7:30pm in the Sanctuary. The celebration begins with a concert of music for piano, organ, violin, and cello.  Saturday, 9/20: “Children’s Celebration” – Rosalita’s Puppets will entertain children of all ages; “FPC on Parade” in the new Community Room, including performances by FPC musicians, history and information on the various programs and activities at FPC. Silent Movie at 7:30pm Sunday, 9/21.  9 am Service: “A Child’s Introduction to the New Building”. 11 am Service:  Former Intern Minister, The Rev. New Baby Brunch
The Stow Area Parents Network would like to invite the newest members of the local community and their parents to a New Baby Brunch on Saturday, September 20, 10:30am, at  the home of Alina Carter (330 Hudson Rd., Stow). Parents with children ages 0 to 14 months old are welcome to attend this event to meet other local parents and babies. Membership in SAPN is not required. NASHOBA MIDDLE SCHOOL HOCKEY
Registration remains open for the Nashoba Middle School 2014-2015 Ice Hockey Program.  Eligible participants include all 6th-8th grade students in Bolton, Lancaster, and Stow.  Multiple Nashoba teams will be established, so all experience levels (from Beginner to Elite) are welcome! The 16-game schedule begins in late October, with games held at New England Sports Center in Marlboro. Deadline for entry has now been extended until Monday, September 22. NEW BOOK CLUB MEETING
The next meeting of the New Book Club will be on Tuesday, September 23, at 7pm at the Randall Library. We will be discussing I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou. This is the most popular book she  wrote. It is the story of her life from childhood in Arkansas to the birth of her child. While we have lost her as a living artist, her legacy in words and example live on.  Give us your thoughts on this coming-of-age book. The Stow Democratic Town Committee will meet on Wednesday, September 24, at 7:15pm, on the second floor of the Randall Library. Hale Middle School Council Seeking Community Member
The Hale Middle School Council is looking for a community member interested in participating in the School Council. The School Council serves as an advisory board to the principal of the school, develops and reviews the School Improvement Plan, and provides feedback on other topics (e.g. handbook, annual school survey). The community member must be a Stow resident, and cannot be a parent/guardian of a current Hale Middle School student or an employee of the Nashoba Regional School District. The School Council meets once a month while school is in session, usually the second Thursday of the month, from 4:30 – 5:30pm at Hale.  Interested parties should contact Principal George King via email, [email protected], by September 30. TOUR APPLEFIELD WITH THE STOW GARDEN CLUB
The Stow Garden Club will be meeting on Wednesday, October 1, at 4pm for a tour of Applefield Farm on Rt. 117 in Stow. Kirstin Mong, owner, will host the group and present how their successful business is managed, including growing and harvesting of vegetables, flowers, and other merchandise. She will be able to answer gardening questions. Come celebrate the beauty of gardening with us. Pizza and cider will be served at the Union Church immediately following the tour. Harvey Leonard is Coming to Stow
Local weather expert Harvey Leonard, chief meteorologist for WCVB (Channel 5), will be giving a presentation at the old Town Hall building in Stow on Wednesday, October 1, about extreme weather and the effects it can have on communities. The event, hosted by the Stow Medical Reserve Corp and the Board of Health, will begin at 7:30pm,with a brief discussion about sheltering at home, creating 72-hour kits for people and pets, and the MRC’s role in running a community shelter, if there is a need. NRHS Band Concert INTRODUCES NEW BAND DIRECTOR
Presented by Nashoba Friends of Music. Back to school! Introducing Mr. Joseph McCarthy, Nashoba Regional High School’s new Band Director. Joseph McCarthy has created a lively, interesting program of music for you on Tuesday, October 14,  at 7pm. Come out and meet our new band director and see our talented children. He has so many wonderful things in store for the program! There will be performances by the Concert Band and our two Jazz Bands. Admission is $5, with students and seniors free. Refreshments will be served.

Stow Postal Pantry Food Drive
The Stow Food Pantry will hold its annual “Share the Bounty” Postal Pantry Food Drive the week of October 6-11. The Stow Food Pantry receives most of its food donations during the  Postal Pantry – placed in owners’ mailboxes and picked up by the mail carriers -along with many of its financial donations.

NASHOBA GIRLS LACROSSE SPRING 2014 REGISTRATION
Spring Registration will open on or about October 15 for current players, and will close October 31. Beginning November 1, regitration will also be open to the general public until November 30. A discount will be offered to those players who register before November 25. Team sizes will be limited. We are able to offer only one team per age group.  NGL will be holding an informational open meeting on October 24, 7pm, at Slater’s Restaurant, 356 Main St., Bolton. Current NGL families, as well as anyone with questions about our program, are encouraged to attend. We are in need of a Secretary and Registrar. Rummage Sale OctOBER 24 & 25
The Union Church of Stow will be holding its fall rummage sale on Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25.  Doors open at 9am each day. Save the Date:  Stow Flu Clinic October 25!
Flu season is coming! The Stow Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), under the direction of the Board of Health (BoH), has scheduled a Flu Clinic to administer vaccine for influenza from 9am to 1 pm, Saturday, October 25, at the Hale School. Only the injectable form of vaccine will be available (i.e., there will be no intranasal option), and the vaccine can be administered to individuals 3 years of age and older (families with infants and toddlers should request vaccine from their pediatrician’s office).  Cost for vaccination will be covered by insurance and/or Medicare.  If you have questions, you can contact the Board of Health by calling 978-897-4592 or by sending an email to [email protected].

CRAFTERS WANTED
Crafters wanted for our Annual Holiday Craft Fair sponsored by The Stow Friends of the Council on Aging to be held on Saturday, November 1,  9am to 3pm at the St. Isidore Church located at 429 Great Rd, Stow, MA. We are opening our annual craft fair to include a select group of juried crafters. Booths are 8’ by 10’ for $40 each. There will also be food, senior crafts, and a bake sale. We attract a large attendance and are always well supported by the Stow residents as well as visitors from adjoining towns. We will advertise in local newspapers as well as posting ads at local merchants and will display a street banner. INTRODUCTION TO FISHING FOR KIDS
Is your child interested in learning how to fish? The evening is a good time to see if you can get a bite! On Friday, September 19, at 5-6:30pm, come learn about the different types of fish found in Puffer Pond and hopefully catch a nice view of the sunset. Registration is open for 8 kids. Fishing pole and equipment are not required. The evening begins at the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center at 680 Hudson Rd., Sudbury. OARS River Cleanup – Join Us!
OARS will hold its 28th Annual River Cleanup on Saturday, September 20, from 9am to noon.  OAR volunteers will wade into the Assabet, Sudbury, and Concord rivers and tributaries to continue the effort to restore our beautiful rivers. Trash, tires, bottles, car parts, bicycles – whatever we find that shouldn’t be there – will be collected for more appropriate disposal. There is lots of work to be done.

We will be working this year in Stow and surrounding towns. The cleanup will be followed by a pizza lunch and celebration along the rivers.

Annual Harvest Festival to Benefit Emerson’s Pediatric Care
On Saturday, September 27, from 11 am – 3 pm, Verrill Farm will be transformed into an old-fashioned fair ground for the 8th Annual Harvest Festival and Benefit for the Pediatric Intervention Team at Emerson Hospital. The event features games, music, food, a raffle, and the search for the perfect pumpkin in the pick-your-own fields.

Proceeds from the Harvest Festival are used by Emerson Hospital’s Pediatric Intervention Team to create and distribute age-appropriate kits to all children treated at the hospital. The kits contain comfort items and activities that are used to help children and caregivers cope successfully with the hospital experience. To date, the Harvest Festival has raised more than $82,800 for the Coping Kits.

Used Book Sale at Maynard Public Library
The Friends of the Maynard Public Library will hold its annual used book sale Saturday, September 27, 10am to 3pm; and Sunday, September 28, 12noon to 3pm, as part of Maynard Fest. There will be thousands of books for adults and children, including fiction, cookbooks, self-help, travel, history, gardening, and mysteries. DVDs and music CDs will also be available. Free Child Safety and Wellness Training AT CLINTON HOSPITAL
Back by popular demand, Clinton Hospital’s Community Benefits Dept. is offering a free American Red Cross child safety course for anyone between ages 11 and 15. The course takes place in Conference Rooms A and B at Clinton Hospital, 201 Highland St., Clinton. Classes are held Saturdays, September 27 and October 4, from 10am to 1pm. Participants must attend both classes and pass an exam to earn a certificate of completion.

The two-day courses give youths the knowledge and confidence to care for infants and school-age children. Combining video, activities, hands-on skill training, and discussion for a complete learning experience, this program teaches such skills as how to respond to emergencies and illnesses with first aid, rescue breathing, and other appropriate care; recognizing safety and hygiene issues; feeding, diapering, and caring for infants; and starting a baby-sitting business through workforce development.
