The Independent Clause

We send out our deepest condolences to the Olohan/Beirne family on the loss of 6-year-old Sheila Beirne. We hope that the family’s deep faith sees them through this difficult time.

We also want to recognize the loss of Ann Dowen, who was the founder of the Union Church of Stow’s free monthly dinners. Mrs. Dowen volunteered her time to help create a sense of community and sharing enjoyed by many.

Another community tradition was upheld this past weekend with the 2013  SpringFest activities drawing residents throughout the weekend. Photos of the events can be found on pages 7 and 15, as well as on photographer Greg Troxel’s website at www.lexort.com/gallery. Thanks again to Greg for another year of great photos!

And another tradition will be held this coming weekend with the Annual Memorial Day parade and ceremonies taking place on Monday, May 27 at 2pm. The Veterans Graves Committee is seeking volunteer singers for the ceremony. Details of the parade can be found on page 4 and see page 10 for more information about lending your voice to the occasion.

As promised last week, we have included a special golf section in this week’s paper and will do so in next week’s as well. This week, Nancy writes about the former Maynard Country Club, now the Maynard Golf Club, which was purchased by the town of Maynard with CPA funds and is now a public course.

On the lighter side of golf, Ann Needle dragged husband Jeff out to one of the toughest mini-golf courses I’ve ever played. You will find no pretty windmills or pirates, and no dinosaurs, but you will find a challenge. All of the holes are modeled after famous courses and they are tough. I do have to mention, that I beat Tim and Steven on this course. Of course Steven was maybe 10 or 11 at the time, but it still counts. I beat them both. HA.

And along with the Golf section, there are THREE new contests with some great golf prizes from Shaker Hills, Maynard Golf Club and Stow Acres. See page 8 for more information or visit www.stowindependent.com tomorrow afternoon for more details and to enter.

Joy of all joys, my beautiful azaleas have fully bloomed. This is their second full season and they are just blazing with color. I was thinking of moving my desk so I could gaze at them all day, but I decided I better just get some work done.
