Randall Library Teen Literature Book Club, Wednesday, July 17, at 4:30pm-This month’s Randall Library Teen Lit Book club will feature the book Code Name Verity, by Elizabeth Wein. In 1943, a British fighter plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France and the survivor tells a tale of friendship, war, espionage, and great courage as she relates what she must to survive while keeping secret all that she can. Come talk about this book, make new friends and share a snack with Youth Services Librarian, Martha Boksenbaum. Plus, help choose next month’s book.
Animal Adventures, Thursday July 18th at 2:00pm- Animal Adventures will present eight to ten animals in a one-hour session. Meet the animals, hear interesting stories and information about them and get close. Some petting will be allowed with supervision. Come enjoy this all-ages animal program!
The Loser Club- Thursday, July 18th, at 3:00pm- Author Jay Solomon and writing workshop- Author Jay Solomon (a Stow resident) will be at the Randall Library to discuss and read from his book The Loser Club. Jay will talk about the writing process and what it was like to self-publish his book. Afterwards there will be a writing workshop with writing prompts provided. Books will be available for sale and signing.
Living with Coyotes, Thursday, July 25th at 7:00pm- John Maguranis, Project Coyote Massachusetts Representative will speak about coyotes, their natural behavior, habits, and pet and human safety, as well as myths and facts about them. Come learn with us!
Pumpernickel Puppets: Peter Rabbit, Thursday July 25th at 2:00pm. Pumpernickel Puppet shows are presented with a cast of colorful puppet characters, audience participation, live voices and sound effects and fast paced scripts that not only entertain, but stimulate children’s imagination and creativity. A demonstration period follows every performance giving the audience some insight into what happens behind the scenes.
Wings & Wheels: Cruise-In/Fly-In to Minute Man Air Field
Head to Minute Man Air Field (302 Boxboro Road, Stow) every Thursday night this summer from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM through August 29. Featured cars each week, but all cars are welcome. Open to the public, this event features great food, including wood-fired pizzas, burgers, and dogs from Nancy’s Air Field Cafe. Plenty of show parking and separate public parking. Two Stow Gardens on Garden Conservancy Open Gardens List
On Saturday, July 20, two gardens in Stow will be amongst those open to the public as part of The Garden Conservancy’s Open Gardens Days.
Rock Bottom Garden at the home of Rosemary Monahan & Stefan Cover will be open 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. This one-acre garden has been shaped by two decades of collaboration between a woody plant zealot and a perennial gardener. From the 1840s house situated on the top of a dry knoll, one can enjoy sweeping vistas of the gardens below. These include mixed borders, a woodland garden, an herb garden, a bog garden, cactus garden, and rock garden. Also on Saturday, the Glenluce Garden at 18 Marlboro Road in Gleasondale will be open 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Glenluce Garden is a small, personal, and romantic garden. Entering by the western gate, you will find yourself on a mound with green paths beckoning in seven directions. Explore these paths to discover a grove of paperbark maples, an island of tree peonies, or a border of fragrant native azaleas. A pergola covered by climbing roses leads to a frog pond shaded by heptacodium and a courtyard with raised vegetable beds. Glenluce Garden is the home of at least twenty-two magnolias, eighty-eight rhododendrons, about 100 peonies, and more than 150 old-fashioned roses.
Planning Department Holds Visual Preference Survey Workshop
The Town of Stow Planning Department will be holding a public Visual Preference Survey workshop on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013 at 7 PM in the Stow Town Hall as part of its ongoing Lower Village Business District Planning and Redevelopment effort. The workshop will feature an engaging visual survey of regional development examples, allowing participants an opportunity to rate different images as to their appropriateness for Lower Village and take part in an interactive discussion to help guide the future look and feel of Stow’s Lower Village Business District.
Christina Orlando Photography Art Show at Nancy’s Airfield Cafe
The photos of Christina Orlando, 2013 graduate of Nashoba High School, will be on display in Nancy’s Air Field Cafe at Minute Man Airfiled starting July 8th until the last week in August. Throughout high school Orlando was very passionate about photography and she received several scholastic awards for her work. She will be attending the New England School of Photography in the fall. Planning Department Holds Flood Insurance Rate Map Meeting
The Town of Stow Planning Department, in conjunction with the Town of Bolton, will be holding an informational meeting regarding FEMA’s Flood Insurance Rate Map Update for 2013 in Stow Town Hall on Monday, July 29th at 7 PM. Attendees will hear an overview of the Flood Insurance Rate Map update process, how the new determinations may affect residents’ properties and the steps home and business owners can take to mitigate the financial impact associated with the update and recent flood insurance reform legislation. Vacation Bible School at St. Isidore
St. Isidore Parish is pleased to offer our Vacation Bible School again this summer! Our “Kingdom Rocks” adventure begins onMonday, August 12 and ends on Thursday, August 15. Each day runs from 9:30 – 12:30. The cost is $30 per child, with a maximum of $90 per family. The week is open to children aged 4 by September 1 through those entering 6th grade in the fall. Upcoming Artisans Fair & Local Artisans Wanted
The Lake Boon Association is hosting the 5th Annual “Lake Boon Artisans Fair” on Saturday, August 24, 10am-3:30pm at the beautiful Pine Bluffs Recreation Area, as part of the fun-filled 2013 Water Carnival weekend. Shoppers mark your calendars and come support your talented neighbors! We are also looking for additional local artisans to participate, and are asking for a nominal donation from each artisan ($10 for Lake Boon Assoc. members, $15 for non-members) to reserve a space. River’s Edge Arts Alliance
The Children’s Theater production of Peter Pan will be held on Thursday & Friday, July 18 & 19 at 7:00 pm at Hudson High School, and the Youth Theater production of Legally Blonde, The Musical will be held at the Hudson High School Auditorium on Friday & Saturday, July 26 & 27 at 7:30 pm at Hudson High School,. The comfortably air conditioned Hudson High School is located at 69 Brigham Street and is handicap accessible with plenty of free parking. Volunteers Needed to Help Eradicate River Water Chestnuts
Saturday, July 20 (9 am – 12 pm), Tuesday, July 30 (5 pm – 8 pm), Saturday, August 3 (9 am – 12 pm). Join OARS for a fun day on the Assabet, Sudbury, and Concord Rivers (exact locations to be determined). Using canoes, volunteers will pull water chestnuts out of the water by hand and then dispose of them at a designated shore site. We will also need some people helping on shore. If you need a boat, we have a limited number available on a first come first serve basis so sign up early! To register, please email [email protected] or call 978-369-3956. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet & dirty (long sleeves recommended). Bring sunscreen, a hat, a water bottle, and work gloves (if you have them). Puppet Power Hour: Saturday, July 20th at 1-2pm Teddy Roosevelt and the Blue Goose will talk about National Wildlife Refuges, how they got started, what they are up to now, cool things you can see on refuges, and how you can keep refuges strong. Family Nature Club: Sunday, July 21st at 1pm Bring your kids and come jump into nature with us as a family! We are starting a family nature club for kids. Every 3rd Sunday of every month we will get together and explore the outdoors for an hour of fun discovery! During the summer months we will learn about the wildlife found at the refuge by acting out these animals and creating natural puppets that will go along with a short informal play we’ll do in August. FOHBC National Bottle Show
The Federation Of Historical Bottle Collectors will he holding it’s National Show in New England, Saturday and Sunday, July 20-21 at the Expo Center in Manchester, NH. There will be 254 dealer tables with antique bottles, jars, stoneware, blown glass insulators, marbles or related advertising set up at the show, and $5000 in raffles during the weekend.
On Saturday, July 20 from 9am-12pm, there will be nine (9) free seminars on the different glass houses and the products they made, including two seminars on New England milk bottles. Saturday afternoon, 1-5pm twenty one (21) displays will be set up for viewing from people’s private collections, these are free to attend. Saturday evening, 7pm, an auction of 150 early New England glass bottles will be held. Early buyer admission, for your avid collector, is Saturday afternoon for $60 per family. General admission is Sunday from 9am-3pm for $5.00, free admission for children under 12.

Iris Society Plant Sale
On Saturday July 27, the Iris Society of Massachusetts (ISM) is holding its biennial plant sale at Verrill Farm at 11 Wheeler Road, Concord. The sale will take place rain or shine from 11 am to 4 pm under the large open tent behind the farm store. The large selection of reasonably priced irises are all from ISM members’ gardens and grow well in our area. There will be bearded irises, from tiny miniature dwarfs to tall beardeds, as well as beardless siberian irises, woodland iris cristata, and many other types. Prices for the irises generally range from $1 for the dwarf irises to $6 for the potted siberians.
If you attended ISM’s iris show on Memorial Day last year and enjoyed the profusion of beautiful irises, you will find many of those same irises at the sale.
