The Independent Clause… January 22, 2014

Picking  my son up from basketball practice at 5pm the other day, I noticed it was still light outside. It was “dusky”, but I could still see quite a bit.  And as I happily contemplated this breakthrough of sorts, I drove past my turn, up to the center of town, adding 5 minutes on to my journey. But, hey, it was still light outside…

And with that, I’m ignoring the bitter cold and blizzard descending upon us and moving on to this week’s edition where you will find both warm and cold articles, along with part 2 of tips on making it a better year ahead.

As promised last week, there is additional information regarding the services for Stow’s Ernest Goldman, who passed away last week at the age of 100. Although Goldman was buried in a private service last Thursday, there will be a public memorial service held sometime this spring.  His full obituary, written by family and documenting the highlights of his remarkable life, can be found on page 3. Again, our condolences to family and friends.

Correction…
In the January 15 edition, Ann Needle’s article “School Schedule Changes Discussed“ reported that the Town Clerks of Nashoba’s member towns were supporting version “A” of the proposed 2014/15 school year calendar.  The article said they supported version A over B, because A granted a vacation day on Election Day, November  4, which could help make traffic flow around the schools and polls easier. Alert Stow Town Clerk Linda Hathaway later pointed out that the clerks support B, which is actually the version allowing for no school on Election Day. It also is the version that allows for a full professional development day April 15, something that would not necessarily call for a change in the teachers’ contract. We apologize for the error.
