Artists at Nancy’s Airfield Cafe
At Nancy’s Airfield Café, located at 302 Boxborough Rd., Stow, the featured artists for January will be John and Stephanie Gill of Hudson. John and Stephanie are active members of the Assabet Valley Camera Club. They enjoy photographing flowers, butterflies, landscapes, and still life subjects. Their photos will make you think of spring and wish for warm weather. The photography will be on display starting January 7.
A reception, open to the public, will be held on Sunday, January 11, from 3-4:30pm. Photo cards, as well as the displayed work, will be available for sale.

 A Multifaith Vigil Against Racism
In response to the recent incidents in Ferguson Missouri, Cleveland Ohio, and New York City, members of several local congregations – including St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Acton, South Acton Congregational Church,  Boxborough United Church of Christ, and The First Parish of Stow and Acton – invite you to join them for a time of witness against racism. The vigil will be held at 7pm on Thursday, January 8, at the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton,  353 Great Rd. We will come together for an interfaith vigil service of reflection, prayer readings, music and candle lighting to deepen our understanding of the ugly role racism still plays in our society, and to strengthen our commitment to eliminate it in the way we live our lives as individuals, and the way we conduct ourselves as a society. All are welcome and our facilities are handicapped accessible.

Boy Scout Christmas Tree Home Pickup Service
Another holiday season has ended, and Stow’s Boy Scout Troop 1 is again scheduling home Christmas tree pickups following the holidays (for residents of Stow only). The scouts would like to make tree disposal convenient and efficient for you.

Please make your tree pickup reservation by January 9. Trees will be picked up at the end of your driveway January 17. We request trees be at the end of your driveway by 6pm on January 16.

Christmas tree pickup is $10 per tree, and checks made payable to Troop 1 Stow can be mailed to Troop 1 Stow, PO Box 75, Stow, MA 01775. Or, order pickup online at http://www.troop1stow.net/. If you have any questions, please contact us by phone at 978-212-9175 or by email at [email protected].

Events at the Randall Library in January
“TAB the New Year Holiday Dance” Saturday, January 10, 5:30-7pm – Welcome in the New Year with a bang! Come join us at the Randall Library when the TAB (Teen Advisory Board) welcomes local Stow teens to celebrate with a live band (“Playing With Fire”), food, Hunger Game Nerf Wars throughout the library (with a prize to the winner/survivor), and a chance to vote for the “STAB (Stow Teen Advisory Board) Awards for 2014” (Best YA book of the year).

Laura Anderson, author of The Boleyn King, The Boleyn Deceit, and Boleyn Reckoning, January 15, 7pm – will be reading from her captivating novels of her imagined Tudor court of King Henry IX and his son Henry VII, and Anne Boleyn.

On Thursday, January 22, 7pm, local author Joe Bebo will be at the library to speak about the historical and genealogical research he did while writing “Family Legends-The Charbonneau Letters.”

BASKETBALL PROGRAM SEEKS VOLUNTEERS AND SPECIAL ATHLETES
Nashoba Unified Sports, the local program pairing special athletes with typical age-mates invites student volunteers and special athletes to participate for the 2015 winter season. NEW BOOK CLUB
The next meeting of the New Book Club will be on Tues., Jan. 13 at 7PM at the library.  We will be discussing Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.  This is a WWII story of survival,resilience, and redemption.  Louis Zamperini channeled his defiance into running.  It brought him to the Berlin Olympics.  He became an airman in WWII.  His bomber crashed and that is only the beginning of the rest of this epic story of survival.  You don’t have to be a sports fan or military buff to enjoy this book.  This is a true story told by a master writer.  Join us to explain how this book affected you.  Questions–call 978-897-6055.

PRESCHOOL OPEN HOUSE AT CENTER SCHOOL
The Nashoba Regional School District will be holding its 2015/2016 school year open house, registration, and preschool screenings for Center School’s  Nashoba  Integrated Preschool on Friday, January 16, from 12:20pm – 3pm. We will also be scheduling screening for 3 and 4 year olds. Screenings can also be scheduled throughout the school year. This screening is a brief assessment of developmental milestones.

Publishing Networking Group Meeting
Stow resident Serena Howlett will lead the meeting on Saturday, January 31, at 10:30am, at the Randall Library. Serena is a freelance editor with a professional background as a lawyer and health policy writer. She will take publishing group members and guests on a coast-to-coast tour of summer writing workshops in beautiful locations with prize-winning faculty and aspiring writers in various genres. Following the workshop, there will be a discussion about the benefits of sharing rough drafts and story ideas and working with an editor.  Bolton Artisans Guild Member Exhibit
The Bolton Artisans Guild is happy to announce its six-week art exhibit in the gallery at Harvard Center on the Common, 7 Fairbanks St., Harvard. The exhibit will run until January 17. Free admission.

Registration is open for Winter Arts After School programs
Exciting new Arts After School workshops are beginning  through the River’s Edge Arts Alliance. These are three workshops for grades 1-4.
Let It Go is a beginner vocal class where students will develop musical skills and concepts using Kodaly methodology, enabling them to be able to read music and join a group in singing and allow them to “let it go” with confidence. Disney, Broadway and Folk music will be explored ending in a mini concert on February 23. This vocal class will take place on Mondays from 4-5pm for 6 weeks beginning on January 5 at Hudson High School ,Choral Room C110. The cost is $90 for members and $100 for non-members.

Treasure Trunk Theater II is a creative theater class. Using movement, vocal work, improvisation, and creative drama techniques, kids will also stretch their imaginations, words, actions and ideas, to develop stories. This workshop will take place at Hudson High School on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 for 6 weeks beginning on January 6. The cost  is $90 for members and $100 for non-members.

Budding Artist II is a fun and expressive art class using acrylics that will help young artists develop new techniques. The Budding Artist workshop will take place on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30pm for 4 weeks beginning on January 7 at Paint Misbehavin’ on Main Street in Hudson. The cost  is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

 EVENTS AT ASSABET RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
NOTE:  The Assabet River NWR Visitor Center will be closed indefinitely on Thursdays as of January 1. However, it will remain open Friday-Sunday, 10am-4pm, but will be available for use by other organizations on closed days. The Visitor Center is at 680 Hudson Road, Sudbury. FARNWR Winter Solstice Avian Survey, Saturday, January 10, at 8am – We will be doing an informal survey of birds found in the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge. Bird ID skills helpful, but not necessary. Please bring binoculars and a bird ID guide and remember to dress warm. Showing of “Chasing Ice”, Thursday, January 15, 7pm – Follow National Geographic photographer James Balog across the Arctic as he deploys time-lapse cameras designed for one purpose: to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers (75 mins). Refuge Fledglings, Friday, January 23, 10:30am – This nature-themed program series will include crafts, stories, and games or songs that will relate to a different topic each month. Programs are held the 4th Friday of every month 10:30am – 11:30am, for 2 to 5 year olds; siblings welcome.

River’s Edge Arts Alliance New Adult Art Workshops
Getting the Role is an adult audition workshop that will give you the tools you need to step up your skills and lead you to a better chance of being cast in the role you desire, or  to make an impression on another person or group of people. This three-day audition workshop for actors 18 and older takes place on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, January 12, 13, and 16, from 6:30-9:30pm at Hudson High School Auditorium. The fee is $100 for members and $125 for non-members.

Wall Mask Sculptures is a decorative paper-mache art class. You will use a variety of acrylic paints to complete a colorful mask wall hanging to add to your home and complement your room’s color palette. Adults 18 and older, who are beginners through experienced, may register. This workshop will be held on Mondays from 6:30-8:30pm for 4 weeks beginning on February 2 at Paint Misbehavin’ on Main Street in Hudson. Adults over age 21 may purchase beer or wine as part of the experience. The fee is $125 for members and $150 for non-members.

Auditions for “ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST”
Auditions for the River’s Edge Players production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,  by Dale Wasserman from the novel by Ken Kesey, will be held at Hudson High School, 69 Brigham St., on Tuesday and Thursday, January 20 and 22,  from 6:30 – 9:30pm. All auditionees must be over the age of 18. Character descriptions can be found at www.upwitharts.org. Auditions will consist of cold readings.

Fifth Bolton Repair Café
The Rotary Club of Nashoba Valley, with help from Bolton Local, will hold the next Bolton Repair Café on Saturday Jan. 24, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be held in Davis Hall at the First Parish of Bolton Church, 673 Main St. in Bolton. Bring your items that need repair, and knowledgeable volunteers will try to fix them for free. The volunteers can work on items such as small appliances, computers, lamps, bikes, jewelry, and clothing. They can also sharpen knives, scissors, and garden tools. You only pay for needed parts. If you know what parts are needed, please get them ahead of time and bring them to the Repair Café to save time.
