Upcoming Events at the Randall Library in January
Author Visit: Kirk Westphal, (author of No Ordinary Game) , Thursday, January 14, 7pm — Many of the sporting world’s most profound achievements and displays of humanity are never recorded. They happen on sandlots, asphalt and backyards. No Ordinary Game is the grandstand for everyday miracles—a memoir of “ordinary” games told with a touch of humor that show us how to transcend possibility or lighten life’s burdens simply by picking up a ball.

Bi-Lingual Preschool Story-time, January 15, 10:30am —The Randall Library is having a special story-time. Come join the fun! At this bi-lingual story-time we will be reading a delightful story in both English and Polish. As with all our preschool story-times, after the reading we will be making a craft.

Seasonal Sensations Concert with The Rhythm Room, Saturday, January 23 , 2pm —Come enjoy this family-fun event when The Rhythm Room comes to rock the Randall Library! Playing a selection of seasonal tunes, this Rhythm Room performance will be a fun time for everybody. There will be music, dancing and the chance to “join the band” and make music out of everyday objects. Don’t miss out on the chance to warm up on a cold winter’s day.

OPEN HOUSE/REGISTRATION FOR NASHOBA PRESCHOOLS
The Nashoba Regional School District will be holding its 2016/2017 Open House/Registrations/Preschool Screenings for the Nashoba Integrated Preschools on Friday, January 15, from 12:30pm – 3pm. An appointment is required to attend. For an appointment with the Center School Preschool, contact Mary O’Brien at (978) 897-0290 x-6100. We will also be scheduling screening for 3 and 4 year olds of Stow. Screenings can also be scheduled throughout the school year. This screening is a brief assessment of developmental mitones.

Girl Scout Cookies Are Here!
The Stow Girls Scouts will be selling at Shaw’s January 16 and 17, January 23 and 24, February 6 and 7, and February 20 and 21. Stop by to get all your favorites! Thin Mints, Caramel de Lites, Peanut Butter Patties, Shortbread, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Lemonades, Thanks-A-Lot, and Cranberry Citrus Crisps, America’s favorite cookies, are only $5 per box. Cookie sales help support the Girl Scouts in our community by teaching them the skills of goal setting, decision making, and people skills as well as help them attend fun and educational activities. Don’t like cookies? Consider donating a box to our military troops or the local food pantry!

Stow Area Parent Network (SAPN) Pre-K Event
Put on your bowling shoes. Kids entering kindergarten in 2016 (and their caregivers) are invited to come to the Acton Bowladrome on Saturday, January 23, from 10am – 12noon, to meet other kids who will be going into kindergarten. Rep. Hogan Announces Office Hours in Stow
State Rep. Kate Hogan will be hosting office hours in Stow on Thursday, Jan. 21, from 6 to 7pm at the Randall Library. All are invited to stop by with any questions or ideas. Rep. Hogan represents the Third Middlesex District, which includes the towns of Bolton, Hudson, Maynard and Stow. She currently serves as the House Chair on the Joint Committee on Public Health. She also serves as Co-Chair of the Legislature’s Elder Caucus and Chair of the Library Caucus. No appointment is necessary and meetings will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Publishing Networking Group Meeting
There will be a Publishing Networking Group meeting Saturday, January 23, 10:30am, at Randall Library. This meeting will feature a Job Skills Workshop, where we will work together to write our elevator pitches, value statements, and SWOT analysis.

monthy parenting series: The Defiance Spectrum
The January topic for Nashoba Community Partnership for Children’s Monthly Parenting Series will be “The Definece Spectrum”. As children explore the world around them, nearly all will occasionally test boundaries and challenge authority. While most become more cooperative by age 3, some continually defy any attempt to discipline them and seemingly reject authority all together. This session provides insight into this spectrum and offers effective methods that help children move beyond defiance.

Cold Chocolate at New Revival Coffeehouse
Cold Chocolate is a four-piece band from Boston that fuses bluegrass and roots music with a dash of funk. They’ll be bringing guitar, banjo, upright bass, percussion, and four-part harmony to the New Revival Coffeehouse in Stow on Saturday, January 30, at 7:30pm. Doors open at 7pm. Stow Athletic & Recreation Supporters Inc. (STARS) is a group of parents and other interested parties whose mission is to enrich our community by providing financial support for athletic and recreation programs. STARS is coordinating a brick drive for the Pine Bluffs Improvement Plan. Purchase a brick and have it custom engraved to be installed near the playing fields and new amenities at Pine Bluffs. Personalized brick sizes available: 4×8’s for $50, 8×8’s for $100, 8×8’s with company logo/business for $250. A 6’ permanent bench with personalized plaque also is available for $1,000. Fire Dragon Fitness Challenge
Avoid those midwinter blues by staying active and engaging in a little friendly competition! The Fire Dragon Fitness Challenge is focused on fun, fitness and challenging yourself to be the best competitor in your age group. Sensei Pat Saunders will lead you through a circuit of physical challenges, encouraging you to push yourself to achieve your maximum repetitions in a minute’s time. Fun for kids and adults!

MINUTEMAN to HOLD GIRLS IN STEM CAMp
Minuteman High School will host a Girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) camp in February that is free for seventh- and eighth-grade girls in the Minuteman school district, which includes Stow. The STEM camp will be held at the school, located at 758 Marrett Rd. in Lexington, from February 16-19, from 8am to 2:30pm each day.

Participants will be able to extend their knowledge through hands-on STEM activities, led by Minuteman students certified in mentoring who are enrolled in STEM majors, along with two of Minuteman’s instructors.
