143rd Harvest Fair at First Parish Church
Come to the 143rd annual Harvest Fair, Saturday, Oct. 6 from 10am-3pm at the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton. The church is located at 353 Great Rd on the Common in Stow (at the intersection of Routes 117 and 62). There is ample free parking and the event will be held inside the church buildings in case of rain.
Featured will be all types of homemade baked goods and preserves as well as handcrafted gift items and cards. A large variety of media equipment will be available, as well as books, retro jewelry, and white elephant items. A special children’s area will include the popular “Moon Bounce” and games. A full lunch and snacks will be served and the famous apple pies will be available. Try your luck in the 50/50 raffle while you’re there. Proceeds benefit the church and there is no admission. Battle for the Airfield
The Collings Foundation is hosting a WWII reenactment and WWII Veterans roundtable discussion October 6th and 7th. There will be over 170 reenactors representing several branches of Allied and Axis military participating in an epic battle. Fully restored military equipment of all kinds will be on display and participating in an incredible living history event. Allied and Axis camps were set up with authentic materials and appearance. WWII Veterans from all ranks and branches of service will participate in a roundtable discussion. There will be two battles per day; 11:00 AM and again at 3:00 PM. Veterans roundtable discussion will start at 1:00 PM. Battle outcomes may change from one day to the next. The events will be held at 137 Barton Road, Stow MA. Advance ticket purchase is $18 for Adults and $8 for children 12 years and younger (October 1st deadline). Cost at gate is $20 for adults and $10 for children. No reservations needed to attend. We recommend arriving one hour prior to each reenactment. We will be offering rides in various aircraft. Call to reserve flights or with questions. The Randall Library is proud to welcome author Jacqueline Sheehan who will be reading from her latest book “Picture This” which was featured in People Magazine’s “Great Summer Reads” section. At the event Jacqueline will also speak about her writing process and how she researcher her ideas. There will be a question and answer session at the end of the evening and books will be available for sale and signing.
Preschool Music Time, Thursday, October 11, 10:30 am at the Randall Library
Teachers from the Franklin School of Hudson will be at the Randall Library to teach pre-school age children the joy of moving to and learning to read thru music. Come join the fun at this event and bring your dancing shoes!
Early Literacy Education Workshop October 12, 10:30 am at the Randall Library
Cynthia Maxfield the Early Childhood Coordinator of the Nashoba Community Partnership for Children will be at the Randall Library every 2nd Friday of the month to present to children and parents fun activities and games to promote early literacy skills in pre-school aged children. Come enjoy the fun of reading and doing a craft and learn how you can help your child learn to read using new techniques and fun hand’s on activities.
Young Eagles Flight Rally Scheduled For Saturday, October 13
All those between ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies on Saturday, October 13, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, as EAA Chapter 196 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at Minute Man Airfield, 302 Boxboro Road, Stow. Registration takes place next to Nancy’s Airfield Café. Pilots at the event will also explain more about their airplanes, allowing young people to discover how airplanes work and how pilots ensure safety is the prime concern before every flight. The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation. Stow Conservation Trust Harvest Ball
SCT Harvest Ball will take place at the Collings Foundation on October 13th starting at 7:30pm. Come support the protection of open space in Stow while dancing to live music amongst the antique planes and cars of the Collings Foundation, bidding on the silent auction and enjoying delicious hors d’oeuvres by ABCatering and desserts by babycakes and confections. “Skills in Our Town” at West School on Sunday, October 14
A variety of skills will be on display during the “Skills in Our Town” program at Stow’s West School Museum on Sunday, October 14. “Skills in Our Town” is a family-oriented event in which artists and artisans from the Stow community both show off their abilities and provide lessons – often hands-on experiences – in their avocations. The Skills program, running from 3 pm to 5:30 pm, is free and open to all interested persons. The program is jointly presented by the Stow Historical Society and the Stow Historical Commission. Participants will include Honey Pot Hill Orchard’s Richard Martin, demonstrating beekeeping – (with the hives but without the bees being present), photographer Jonathan Daisy , jewelry maker Gail Thomas, artist Judith Jaffe, potter Ted Carvalho and Karen Gray demonstrating weaving. Adults and kids alike will have a chance to try their hand with such activities as weaving, jewelry making and ceramics.
The Stow West School Museum is located at the intersection of Harvard Road and Hiley Brook Road.
St. Isidore Parish Fall Festival
The St. Isidore Parish of Stow is excited to bring back its annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 20, 2012 from 10AM to 3PM in the St. Isidore Church Hall and grounds! Come enjoy a day of fun and food with your family and friends as we have hot dogs and hamburgers available for sale, local crafters selling their handmade items (start your holiday shopping early!), our parish cookbook for sale, a bake sale table, face painting & moonbounce for the kids, and lots of other exciting events! Admission is free! MA State College and University Fair at Nashoba
Nashoba Regional High School invites all area parents and students in grades 9-12 to attend our MA State College and University Fair on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 from 6:00pm-8:00pm in the Upper Gym at the High School. MEFA will also be conducting two college planning seminars in the high school auditorium from 6-7pm and 7-8pm. Students and parents are welcome to attend either session.
New Book Club Meeting
The next meeting of the New Book Club will be at 7PM on Tuesday, October 23 at the library. The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes is the book we will be discussing. Memories–true or false? What do you remember about events in your life? Is it possible that some of what happened didn”t happen that way at all? This book may shed a different light on what actually occurred. Crafters Wanted
Crafters wanted for our Annual Holiday Craft Fair sponsored by The Stow Friends of the Council on Aging to be held on Saturday, November 10, 9am to 3pm at the St. Isidore Church located at 429 Great Rd, Stow, MA. We are opening our annual craft fair to include a select group of juried crafters. Booths are 8’ by 10’ for $40.00 each. There will also be food, senior crafts and a bake sale. We attract a large attendance and are always well supported by the Stow residents as well as visitors from adjoining towns. We will advertise in local newspapers as well as posting ads at local merchants and will display a street banner.
