The Independent Clause… July 9, 2014

| July 8, 2014

Welcome to our Online Edition for July 9, 2014!

As we stated in our last few papers, the summer schedule includes this week’s online-only edition and we will be back in print next week, July 16. There will be another online-only edition on August 13.

We have most of the same sections online as we do in the print edition, so please be sure to click on all the categories to find news, features, sports, letters, calendar, classifieds (with a NEW online form!) and the police report.

Like many people, I enjoyed a Fourth of July week vacation. It was great to have a few days off. Tim and I spent a few days camping near Bennington, Vermont. Neither of us had ever spent any time in that portion of Vermont and it was really worth the visit. For those of you who haven’t been either, “Old” Bennington is very reminiscent of downtown Concord, with many beautiful historic homes and the very tall Bennington Battle Monument. There are also three covered bridges right near each other. The downtown area is full of shops and restaurants (and people and cars).

We camped at the top of a 2400′ mountain with a reservoir, expecting great views. While the campground was clean and well-kept, there were no views to be found, other than on the drive up there. But, I can’t argue with the reasoning- the forest trees have been kept intact other than those cut to make the campground itself and a beach area near the reservoir. So, no big views, but plenty of natural forest and fresh air.

Next up, I took my son and my grandsons to the beach for a few days. It was plenty hot, but we had the ocean, a pool and AC, so we really didn’t suffer too much. Of course, kids never seem to feel the heat quite as much as us old folks! It was nice to be on the beach and watch the kids play in the waves and the sand and breathe in the ocean air. I wish I could bottle that feeling and open it as needed.

But back to reality and work and thunderstorms…
