Division Win for Girls Basketball

By Ellen Oliver

From the beginning of the season Nashoba has had one goal: return to states and this time take home the big trophy. A major obstacle was a reunion with their 2013 state finalist rivals, Medfield, in the Central Mass Division 2 finals. There was a lot of buildup about this game with most of the hype focused on Medfield, who is ranked number two in the state, despite two losses in the regular season. A lot of people bought into the Warrior propaganda – everyone except the undefeated Chieftains, who toppled the Warriors 57-55 in overtime at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon.

Nashoba Primed for Tourney Time

By Rob Kean

This time last year, the Nashoba Regional High boys basketball team was a come-from-behind, feel-good story. Under the energized leadership of a young, first-year coach, the similarly young Chieftains had doubled their win total from the year before, and finished the regular season just two games out of first in the Midland League B. And though they’d also qualified for the MIAA State Tournament, no one would’ve faulted them for mere happiness to be there.

Girls Hoops on Target for Success

By Ellen Oliver

There isn’t a literal target stitched on the backs of the jerseys, but every player on the Nashoba girls’ basketball team, who were the 2013 district champs and state finalist, knows it’s there.

“We know teams are going to give their best when they play us. They’ve been working hard all year to prepare to play us,” said junior Nicole Boucher.

With an 18-0 record, the pressure is mounting to shoot through districts and regain a chance at a state title, plus keep the undefeated streak going as long as possible. According to junior Nikkiah Snoddy, they are right where they want to be.

Nashoba Right on Track

By Rob Kean

If track success is indeed all about peaking at the right time, then the Nashoba Boys and Girls Indoor Track seasons appear headed for heady climaxes.

This past Saturday, both squads rolled into Fitchburg for Mid-Wach B league championship meet with targets on their backs, chief among them the Chieftain girls, on the heels of their perfect regular season. And when all the jumping, heaving and sprinting was done, the girls team walked away with a first-place finish that doubled as an exclamation point, and proclaimed them undisputed league champs.

Basketball – Girls
The Chieftains are poised for a return to post-season success, qualifying for the play-offs with their 83-54 win over Auburn. The key for the girls is to look no further than the next opponent.

“We are focusing on each game, seeing what we can do to get better,” said senior Cecilia Burke, who is a team captain along with Emma Duggan and Emmalie Keenan. While the focus may be near-term, there is a larger goal. “We really want to win, we’re looking for states. For me, it’s the last year to do it,” added Burke.

Alpine Skiing is All in the Family

By Ellen Oliver

When asked about the spirit of a team, many athletes say their teammates are like family. For eight members of the 18-person Nashoba Alpine ski team, they actually are. The team has seven girls and 11 boys, including four sets of siblings.
“It’s fun because we all know each other and share the common interest of skiing,” said senior Flora Tierney, who shares the roster with her brother George, a junior. “A lot of kids have had an older brother or sister on the team and wanted to try it, too.”
