One look at the Nashoba Valley Youth Soccer League scoreboard and standings from the recently completed fall season and it’s evident that Stow Soccer Club teams made their marks across all levels. Like the Girls Under-14 team, sporting a 5-2-1 record and finishing a solid 3rd of 14 teams. Or the Boys Under- 12 quad that went 6-2-0, outscoring their opponents 32-12.

The Nashoba Regional football team’s 2013 season ended the same way it began – on a winning streak. The Chieftains’ 35-0 Thanksgiving Day victory over traditional rival North Middlesex was Nashoba’s third consecutive win and brought the team’s final record to 7-4.
That record is a testament to the way the Chieftains remained committed to salvaging their season after losing their only playoff game back on November 1, said first-year head coach Jamie Tucker.

Before the Nashoba cheerleading squad takes the floor in competitive meet, they place their hands in the middle of the huddle and say in unison: “I Believe.” That faith in each other brought the team back to the Division 2 state cheerleading competition at Wachusett High School on Sunday, November 24.
Coming off a third place finish at regionals and a second place spot in leagues, the Nashoba squad’s routine earned a score of 152 points and an 11th place finish in the state meet.
According to Head Coach Tanya Beaudry, the divisions for cheerleading are realigned every two years based on school enrollment numbers. “This year, four teams in Division 2 were in Division 1 last year,” she said. “For us to make Division 2 states this year was incredible.”

After the first week of playoff games, only girls soccer remained to represent the Chieftains in the post-season. The exceptions to the playoff system are the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams, who each sent seven runners to the Central Mass. Division 1 meet this week and the varsity cheerleading squad, who continued their season with a great showing at the league meet.

A Chieftain was the first to cross the tape for the girls’ and for boys’ races on Saturday, propelling Nashoba to dual team wins at Ghiloni Park in Marlboro in the Mid-Wach B championships.
Nashoba sophomore Rylee Gillen secured her second league title with a top place finish (19:29.1) on the 3.1 mile course. Gillen took an early lead and was never contested during the rest of the race, finishing 30 seconds ahead of Quabbin’s Steffany Halfrey (20:04.6).

In a close football game between two evenly-matched teams, the victory often goes to the team with the last chance to score. But things didn’t quite work out that way on Friday for Nashoba Regional, whose night ended on the Marlboro 13 yard line and on the short end of a 28-24 decision.
Nashoba (now 3-2) had led 24-13 in the third quarter, but even after that lead had evaporated and Panther senior quarterback John Rumney found senior receiver Matt Thall in the end zone for the go-ahead score with 68 seconds remaining in the game, the
visiting Chieftains refused to concede.

On Friday night, the Nashoba Regional football players learned for the first time what it’s like to lose a varsity football game.
St. John’s of Shrewsbury, the same team that dealt the Chieftains their last loss in December 2010, won Friday night’s rematch in Bolton 49-21 as Nashoba’s 29-game winning streak skidded to a stop.
