Past Tense…Streetcar in the Woods

By Lew Halprin

It was in the early 1900s when the Concord, Maynard and Hudson Street Railway Company considered providing service from Hudson, going through Gleasondale, Stow and Maynard, and continuing to Acton and Concord. The tracks were to be in the street so that no special railroad bed or bridges needed to be built. However in Gleasondale, a row of worker’s houses were so close to the road that they all had to be moved back about 30’ to provide room for safe streetcar passage.

Nashoba Wins a Tough Battle

By Jordana Bieze Foster

With a record of 1-4, long time rival Clinton wasn’t expected to be much of a match for undefeated Nashoba Regional. But someone forgot to tell the Gaels, who very nearly spoiled the Chieftains’ homecoming on Friday night.
Plagued by penalties and consistently harassed by Clinton’s defenders, Nashoba eked out a 7-0 victory thanks to a strong effort by its own defense and a third-quarter touchdown by Stow senior running back John Ojukwu. But it wasn’t pretty.

Farewell to Father Dave

By Ann Needle

St. Isidore Parish lost its pastor last Friday, October 12, when Father David Doucet succumbed to pancreatic cancer at age 70.

“Fr. Dave” became St. Isidore’s pastor in June 2006. St. Isidore Deacon Charlie Cornell described Doucet as “a humble, quiet man – he was a priest.” Still, Doucet quickly wove himself into life in Stow, continuing the St. Isidore tradition of offering its meeting hall to groups such as Boy Scout Troop 1 Stow and the Stow Blood Drive.

Past Tense…Tree No More

by Lew Halprin

The tree was not on our property; it was on the neighbor’s property. But to all of us in the neighborhood, the large pine tree that was in their back yard between their house and the water of Lake Boon always drew our attention and admiration whenever our gaze was drawn to that side of the lake.
It was perfectly organized with sturdy straight branches and its height proudly reached 80’ into the clouds and provided welcome shade to all those sitting under it. The tree had been doing this for over 100 years. In fact, many of the kids in the neighborhood had opportunities to swing on tires attached to the lower branches of the tree, and as they grew older would swing from long ropes tied to the upper branches that allowed them to swing high over the edge of the property into the lake’s waters with lots of squeals and laughter.

Michael Lopresti, 47, a longtime resident of Hudson, was found dead late Saturday afternoon, submerged under a dock at Lake Boon, outside a Barton Road home in Stow that he had been renting for the past year. Stow Police received calls from a roommate and Lopresti’s ex-wife, that his three children, spending the weekend at his home, could not find him when they awoke Saturday morning. Stow Police said Lopresti had sent a text at 11pm Friday night, but had not been seen or heard from since.
