At the start of every sports season, teams gather, coining inspirational mottos and identifying goals. For 11 local basketball players with special needs, the goal is the same one reiterated throughout locker rooms all over the country: “Make States.” For this team, that means the Massachusetts Special Olympics Winter games, held in early 2013.

Nashoba Regional running back John Ojukwu said he would have preferred to share the spotlight with some of his other teammates during Friday night’s 33-8 home win over familiar foe Holy Name. But the Stow senior also admits that scoring all five touchdowns himself was pretty special too.

The threat of the EEE virus is affecting youth and high school game schedules after several area towns were considered to be a high risk for the virus. As a result, evening activities (anything after 5:30pm) in many of the towns have been rescheduled.

Helmet? Check. PFD, paddle, stubby little boat? Got them. To navigate the Class I-III rapids of the Deerfield River, you need those items, plus a snug spray skirt to keep the water out of the whitewater kayak while it secures you inside. A daunting thought when I realized that if I needed to get out of the kayak fast, I was most likely underwater.
